Węgrów lies in the Liwiec Valley; the river separates the historic regions of Masovia and Podlasie. The town is regarded as the heart of the Liwiec Valley. Two main themes can help you plan your trip: architecture and church history in Węgrów, and leisure activities at Zalew nad Liwcem. You can decide whether to focus mainly on sacred art and historic buildings, or also set aside time for the leisure areas by the water.

Churches and Architectural History in Węgrów

The Minor Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the oldest building in Węgrów. On 4 April 1997, the collegiate church was elevated to the status of a minor basilica. Its sacristy houses the Twardowski Mirror, which dates from the second half of the 16th century. The building and the mirror thus offer different historical reference points: the town’s oldest structure and a sacred object from an earlier era.

The wall paintings also offer a distinctive perspective on the town’s art history. Between 1706 and 1709, Michał Anioł Palloni created nine large wall paintings in Węgrów’s parish church. He painted nine more frescoes in the Poreformaten Church. The Poreformaten complex comprises a monastery and the Church of Saints Peter of Alcantara and Anthony of Padua. Those wishing to focus on church art can explore these sites through their distinct furnishings and historical contexts.

Another striking building stands in the Protestant cemetery: the larch-wood Lutheran church, built in 1679. It is considered the oldest wooden-architecture monument in the area. The Gdański House, a Baroque building dating from the mid-18th century on the north side of the market square, represents a different architectural style. Timber construction, Baroque architecture and church art thus offer different perspectives on Węgrów’s architectural history.

The Evangelical Church is also part of the town’s religious and craft history. It preserves the only original instrument by M. R. Müller in central Poland. The instrument is currently unusable and requires extensive renovation. The bell-founding tradition in Podlasie dates back to the mid-19th century, when the first bell foundry was established in Węgrów. The Evangelical Church’s instrument and Węgrów’s first bell foundry illustrate two different aspects of the town’s history.

Leisure at Zalew nad Liwcem

Zalew nad Liwcem has ten fishing spots and jetties, as well as 2.3 kilometres of cycle paths. There are also playgrounds, picnic areas, and courts for volleyball, basketball and badminton. Activities range from cycling and fishing to ball games and taking a break at a picnic spot. Unlike the churches and historic buildings, this is a place focused on active leisure.

As you plan your stay, you can weigh up the different themes of your trip: the basilica, the two churches with Palloni’s paintings, the wooden church and the Baroque Gdański House define the historic side. Zalew nad Liwcem, by contrast, brings several leisure options together in one place. Węgrów lies in the Liwiec Valley, where the river separates the historic regions of Masovia and Podlasie; this connection with the landscape adds a clear regional dimension to the town’s history.
