City history between the Oder’s banks and the fortifications
Krapkowice is a city of medieval origins. For centuries, two distinct settlements existed here: the important urban trading centre of Krapkowice stood on the left bank of the Oder, while the old fishing settlement of Otmęt was on the right. The historical contrast lies in the settlements’ different roles and locations on the riverbanks: trade and fishing are distinct themes in the history of the area.
The surviving fortifications include the defensive tower at the Upper Gate, dating from the 14th century, and an adjoining section of the defensive wall on Basztowa Street. Further fragments of the wall are located in the northeastern corner of the city; a lowered section of wall lies in the southwestern district. A disused railway bridge also now carries a pedestrian walkway. It represents a different kind of transport history from that of the medieval fortifications.
Defensive tower and sacred architecture
The Krapkowicka Baszta, also known as Wieża Bramy Górnej or Wieża Bramy Prudnickiej, is a rubble-stone tower in the Gothic-Renaissance style. It was built in the second half of the 14th century and remodelled around 1580. This sequence distinguishes two building phases: the tower’s construction and its later alteration.
The present architectural form of St. Nicholas Church also dates from the late 14th century. The church, which has been remodelled several times, preserves Gothic elements, including rib vaults in the presbytery. Its furnishings include a stone baptismal font from the 16th century and an elaborately decorated monstrance dating from 1744. By contrast, the Baszta’s defensive tower and its construction and remodelling history take centre stage, while the church brings together Gothic architectural elements and dated furnishings.
Technical monuments and city landmarks
Technical monuments include former paper mills with a beautiful red-brick clock tower, as well as two lime kilns. The term “mills” refers to their former use; the lime kilns represent another type of technical monument. In this way, traces of industrial history complement the fortifications and sacred architecture.
The Krapkowice hejnał is played from the Krapkowicka Baszta every day at noon. Thus, alongside the construction dates of the historic buildings, there is a precise time of day: the tradition is associated with midday. The Obuwniczy Szlak leads visitors to interesting sights in Krapkowice using QR-code-marked shoe symbols and shares the city’s history. Along this route, the marked symbols and QR codes guide visitors to historical information.
Views and visiting information
The Krapkowicka Baszta has an observation terrace. From there, you can see the city panorama, Mount St. Anne and the Opawskie Mountains; in poorer weather, a telescope mounted on the terrace may help. The various floors contain exhibition rooms with display cases. The terrace looks outward, while the display cases are among the features inside the tower.
You can enter the courtyard of Krapkowice Castle when the school is open. There is a historic well there, probably dating back to the Middle Ages. Check in advance whether a visit is possible, as access depends on the school being open. Krapkowicka Marina offers watersports equipment rental and a campsite; check current availability before your visit.
