Głuchołazy: Old Town, Hiking Trails and Hotels
Accommodation in Głuchołazy
Głuchołazy brings together hiking opportunities and scenery with reminders of the town’s history. When planning your trip, you can choose different things to focus on: explore the connection to the Główny Szlak Sudecki, visit Park Zdrojowy or discover historic places in town.
Hiking Trails and Scenery
The Główny Szlak Sudecki im. Mieczysława Orłowicza was extended to Głuchołazy in 2000. There, it joins the existing red trail. This trail runs from Głuchołazy via the Góry Parkowe massif and Biskupia Kopa to Prudnik. This route makes the town interesting for travelers keen to explore the course of the Main Sudetes Trail and how it connects to an existing trail.
Another landmark in the landscape is Czarcia Ambona. The viewpoint sits above a rocky escarpment that marks the northern end of the Biała Głuchołaska valley. Park Zdrojowy has walking paths and rest areas; it also provides access to a stream where you can wade. The park forms the central part of the former spa town of Głuchołazy. Visitors can therefore enjoy both paths through parkland and a named viewpoint, as well as a connection to longer hiking trails in the area.
Old Town and Historic Traces
Remains of medieval defensive walls can be seen on M. Curie-Skłodowskiej Street. In the heart of the Old Town, the tourist information center is next to Wieża Bramy Górnej. The tower is the most impressive surviving section of the medieval fortifications. The center offers tourist information about the Góry Opawskie and provides local and regional train and bus timetables. Anyone looking for information about the region or how to get around can find both tourist advice and train and bus timetable information there.
The Church of St. Lawrence also offers a glimpse into the town’s architectural history. Its magnificent interior is Baroque; the main altar is Neo-Baroque and features a large statue of St. Lawrence. The two terms refer to different design features that can be seen side by side in the church.
A model showing Głuchołazy in the 17th century stands in the market square. It was installed to commemorate the town’s 800th anniversary. Also in the market square is the Głuchołaska Lipa na Rynku. It was probably planted after 1648 as a peace tree to mark the end of the Thirty Years’ War. A visit to the square thus brings you face to face with both a model of the town from an earlier era and a tree with a traditional story about its origins, though its exact planting date is unknown.
Culture and Special Interests
The Głuchołaska Izba Pamięci Orderu Uśmiechu has been in Głuchołazy since 2023. Its permanent exhibition is devoted to the history of the Order and the people honored with it. The subject is explored not just through a single keepsake, but in a dedicated exhibition.
Another distinctive feature is a group of six life-size sculptures of gold miners along a path in Głuchołazy. The figures depict various tasks involved in extracting gold. Unlike the historic buildings and memorial sites, they offer a concrete picture of activities related to gold mining. Together with the exhibition about the Order, the church and the remains of the defensive walls, they create a varied cultural and historical offering that may influence your choice of destination alongside the hiking and park attractions.
