Białowieża’s historical and natural history highlights include the Palace Park at the former hunting residence of the Russian tsars, the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas, and the exhibitions at the Museum of Nature and Forestry. Białowieża Towarowa railway station also tells the story of the town’s architectural history. When choosing a hotel for your trip, you might first consider which perspective interests you most: the history of the park and residence, Orthodox furnishings, forest landscapes, or the historical use of the forest.

Palace Park and Hunting Residence

The Palace Park was laid out around the hunting residence of the Russian tsars. The building was constructed between 1889 and 1894; the park was laid out around the turn of the 20th century. These dates mark two distinct periods in the area’s history: the construction of the residence and the later creation of the park. As a listed park, Palace Park is protected. It offers a specific starting point for exploring Białowieża’s imperial history.

Orthodox Church: Furnishings and History

The Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was consecrated on January 22, 1895, according to the old calendar. At the time, it was considered the most beautiful church in the entire Grodno Governorate. Its distinctive features include an iconostasis made of colored Chinese porcelain. Construction and furnishing work was completed in 1897, before Tsar Nicholas II’s visit to Białowieża. The consecration and completion of the work thus mark different dates in the church’s construction history.

The parish office of the Orthodox parish of St. Nicholas is located at 9 Sportowa Street. Its office hours are from 9 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 4 p.m. Outside the stated hours, the church can be visited by prior telephone arrangement. The office hours and the arrangement for a visit are two separate details: prior telephone arrangements are required for visits outside the stated hours.

Museum of Nature and Forestry: Forest and Human Use

The Museum of Nature and Forestry presents the nature and history of the Białowieża Forest, as well as centuries of human activity in the area, across two levels. The historical section covers, among other things, beekeeping and haymaking, the processing of wood into turpentine, and the narrow-gauge forest railway. This section therefore explores both traditional activities and the use of wood and forest resources.

The forest communities featured include oak-hornbeam forests, marsh forests, riparian forests, pine forests, and boreal spruce bog forests. The exhibition also uses a modeled ground surface, subdued lighting, day-and-night effects, and forest sounds. These elements are intended to create the impression of being right in the forest. Visitors interested in the nature of the primeval forest will find forest types alongside a historical look at human activity in the area; both topics are part of the museum’s presentation.

Białowieża Towarowa Railway Station

Białowieża Towarowa railway station was built to serve the imperial residence. Its artistic qualities reflect the richly decorated Russian railway architecture of the turn of the 20th century. It is one of the few very well-preserved buildings of this kind in Podlaskie Voivodeship. Following an exemplary renovation, the station received an award in 2004 in the General Monuments Protection Officer’s “Zabytek Zadbany” competition. Its history adds another building associated with the imperial residence to the story of the Palace Park.
