Routes by length and course

The routes starting in and passing through Wiżajny differ in length, course and endpoints. The green hiking trail through the Góry Sudawskie begins in the market square in Wiżajny and ends at the border crossing in Budzisko. At 34.5 kilometres, it is considerably longer than the two circular routes. Unlike those routes, it does not return to Wiżajny but ends in Budzisko. So when choosing, it is important to consider whether you prefer a loop that returns to Wiżajny or a route with a different endpoint.

The red-marked loop around Lake Wiżajny is 12.8 kilometres long and runs through Wiżajny, Burniszki, Stankuny and Wiłkupie before returning to Wiżajny. The yellow-marked loop into the Góry Sudawskie covers 16.5 kilometres; it runs through Sudawskie, Maszutkinie, Makowszczyzna, Kamionka and Marianka before returning to Wiżajny. In a direct comparison of their lengths, the yellow loop is 3.7 kilometres longer. Both loops begin and end in Wiżajny, but their intermediate villages and their connection to the lake or the Góry Sudawskie set their routes apart.

The yellow loop includes numerous hills over 250 metres high, often cut through by ravines and sunken lanes. Sunken lanes are tracks cut into the terrain; together with the ravines, they describe the landforms along this route. This means the loop can be assessed not only by its length but also by these specific landscape features.

The route designated “Szlak 3” runs from Wiżajny through Sudawskie, Skombobole, Maszutkinie, Wingrany and Postawelek to Budzisko. This route and the green hiking trail therefore share Budzisko as their endpoint, while the two loops return to Wiżajny. Before setting out, check the current markings for the three hiking routes mentioned.

Church and art-historical details

The Neoclassical Church of Saint Teresa of Ávila in Wiżajny dates from 1825. Its main altar is older: it dates from the 18th century and is Baroque in style. The church and altar thus represent different periods. The altar is decorated with plant motifs, angels, curved cornices, volutes, gilding and richly carved small column capitals.

Volutes are scroll-shaped decorative forms; capitals form the upper part of small columns. These terms help explain some of the details mentioned. The altar combines figurative motifs such as plants and angels with curved and carved forms. The contrast in dates is also revealing when placing the church in context: the Baroque altar dates from the 18th century, while the Neoclassical building dates from 1825.

A dated landmark on the village green

On 23 May 2022, a playground and an outdoor fitness area opened on the village green in Wiżajny. This provides a specific, more recent date from the town’s history alongside the older dates associated with the church and altar.

When comparing the routes, both the distances and whether they return to Wiżajny matter, as do the intermediate villages and the terrain of the yellow loop. The church adds an art-historical perspective on the building’s date, its altar and its decoration to these features of the town. Together, these different topics offer various ways to assess Wiżajny as a travel destination.
