Bytów brings together several themes that offer different ways to plan a stay: the castle with the West Kashubian Museum, a historic railway bridge and ecclesiastical buildings with stories of their own. If you are looking for a hotel in Bytów, you can choose which sights to visit based on whether you are particularly interested in regional culture, medieval architectural history, engineering or architecture.

Castle, Museum and Concert Series

Bytów Castle was built between 1398 and 1405 as a border fortress and administrative seat of the Teutonic Order. It also served as accommodation for knights travelling to Malbork. These three functions complemented one another: the castle was a defensive structure, an administrative centre and a stop for travellers. Its history is therefore not defined solely by its military role; its administrative and accommodation functions are also part of its story.

The Muzeum Zachodniokaszubskie is housed in the northern, oldest wing of the castle, the Dom Zakonny, as well as in the adjacent Młyńska and Prochowa towers and the perimeter wall. Its permanent ethnographic exhibition is devoted to the material culture of the Bytów Kashubians. The castle thus offers two ways of engaging with history: the building and its former functions, and the exhibition and its regional cultural history theme.

The “Muzyka na Zamku” concert series offers another cultural perspective: chamber concerts have been held for many years in the Portrait Hall of the Muzeum Zachodniokaszubskie. During the academic year, professors and students from the Gdańsk Academy of Music perform there on the first Tuesday of each month. The permanent exhibition and concert series offer different points of focus: the former is devoted to material culture on an ongoing basis, while the concerts follow the academic year and a regular monthly schedule. If concerts are important to your trip, check the specific date before booking and take the academic year into account.

Bridge and Architecture

Most nad Borują offers a different subject from the castle and museum: historic railway construction. Built in 1884, the stone railway bridge crosses the Boruja River in Bytów, stands 20 metres high and consists of six masonry railway bridge spans with semicircular arches made of ceramic bricks. Its materials, height and articulated structure give the building a distinctive architectural profile. If you find engineering structures just as interesting as exhibitions or churches, the bridge offers a subject of its own.

Ecclesiastical History and City Panorama

Ecclesiastical buildings also offer different aspects to compare. After renovation in the 1980s, the Protestant church in Bytów became the Greek Catholic St. George’s Church. Its dome is designed in the Byzantine architectural style. By contrast, the Gothic St. Catherine’s Tower is a remnant of Bytów’s first church. Its three floors display material evidence of the spirituality of former inhabitants of the Bytów region; the tower also provides a viewpoint overlooking the panorama of Bytów. The two sites offer different points of focus: St. George’s Church combines an adaptive reuse of the building with its dome, while St. Catherine’s Tower brings together a church remnant, an exhibition and a panorama.

Bytów as Part of a Road Trip

The castle is on the driving route of the Szlak Zamków Gotyckich, which passes through twelve places in Warmia, Masuria, Powiśle and Kashubia. You can therefore plan your trip around the local themes or the route itself.
