Ugoszcz can be understood through its churches, the reconstructable layout of the medieval village, and the cycling route. Alongside its architectural and settlement history, the 7.0 km route passes through the village and offers a practical starting point for planning your trip. When preparing, you can weigh the village’s history against a cycling tour as the main focus.

Churches: architecture and furnishings

The Church of St. Mary Magdalene was built in 1822 and stands on a small hill. It is an east-facing half-timbered church with brick infill, a stone base, and a rectangular floor plan; the chancel is on the east side. In half-timbered construction, a timber frame forms the structural system; here, the spaces between the timbers are filled with bricks. The base and floor plan describe the building’s foundation and shape, while the eastern chancel provides an additional point of spatial orientation. In terms of regional architecture, the church shares traditions with the church in Sominy. This makes it possible to understand the building not only by its year of construction, but also by its construction method and floor plan.

The main altar in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene is a Rococo altar from the second half of the 18th century; T. Render painted the image of the Madonna and Child in 1868. Two side altars also date from the second half of the 18th century and are in the folk Baroque style. Comparing their dates distinguishes the altars from the later-dated painting; comparing their styles highlights the Rococo main altar and the folk Baroque side altars. The furnishings can therefore be classified in two ways: by date and by design.

The second church in Ugoszcz, Our Lady of the Scapular, was built in 1897. Its later construction date can be compared with that of the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, built in 1822: together, the two churches mark two distinct points in the village’s architectural history.

The medieval village layout

The village layout also contributes to its historical context. Ugoszcz is one of the villages founded in the Middle Ages whose oval layout can still be reconstructed. Its shape has been heavily blurred and altered. The term “village layout” describes the form of the settlement: in Ugoszcz, the oval shape can still be reconstructed, although it has been heavily blurred and altered. Two scales of local history are therefore brought together: the architectural history of individual churches and the medieval layout of the village.
