Sianowo: Pilgrimage and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Sianowo
Sianowo brings together two distinct travel themes: devotion to the Madonna in the church and cycling routes that include the town as a destination or a section of a route. The history of the statue, the religious dates and the different route details provide concrete points of reference for planning your trip.
Madonna and Pilgrimage in Sianowo
The Madonna statue in the church in Sianowo dates from the 15th century and was crowned Queen of Kashubia in 1966. It continues to be venerated by the Kashubian people and by many pilgrims from Poland and abroad. A document from 1480 granted all believers a special indulgence for a pilgrimage to Sianowo to see the “Łaskawa Figura” (Gracious Statue). These dates show how far back the traditional pilgrimage reaches and that the statue is still venerated today.
At the Sanctuary of Our Lady, Queen of Kashubia, a novena to the Madonna of Sianowo is held on Wednesdays during Holy Mass. Every Thursday, after Mass, there is an adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for spiritual vocations. If you wish to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the current schedule in advance: timings may change.
Green Cycling Routes and Route Planning
The green cycling route from Kartuzy to Sianowo passes through Łapalice, Lake Białe and Pomieczyńska Huta. It is 26.5 kilometres long; the estimated travel time is about two hours and 40 minutes. The actual duration depends on the conditions and the cyclist. Use the time estimate as a guide when planning your tour, and check the current route and conditions before setting off.
Another cycling route connection is the 4.8-kilometre Sianowo–Garcz section in the Kashubian Landscape Park. Its main attractions include Lake Sianowskie and the Sanctuary Church, built in 1816. The stated lengths refer to different routes: the connection from Kartuzy to Sianowo and the Sianowo–Garcz section. This makes it easy to distinguish the longer route from the shorter section when planning.
Culture in the Karthaus Destination
Kartuzy is home to a distinct focus on cultural history within the Karthaus destination. The Gothic collegiate church there dates from the 14th century, is one of Pomerania’s most valuable historic buildings and is unique nationally. It bears witness to the work of the Carthusian Order. Its distinctive Baroque roof, shaped like a coffin lid, symbolizes the Order’s monastic ideal and its motto, “memento mori.”
The Franciszek Treder Kashubian Museum in Kartuzy presents literature, material culture, language, and regional history and traditions. Its exhibits are displayed in eight exhibition rooms in the main building. The museum also houses Bazyli’s forge, the “Kaszubska współczesność z korzeni wyrasta” exhibition, and temporary exhibitions. The church and museum offer different perspectives: the heritage of the Carthusian Order and the diverse forms of Kashubian culture.
