Stare Czaple: Cycling Route and Village History
Accommodation in Stare Czaple
In Stare Czaple, a cycling route through the village, sections of hiking trail and historic features of the village layout come together. This gives you different starting points for planning your trip: you can organize your stay around a specific route or focus on the surviving traces of the village’s history. Lake Buk is also a defining landmark, as its shore near Stare Czaple is lined with trees.
Cycling and hiking
The Bronica Dolna–Haska–Czapielski Młyn–Stare Czaple–Gołubie cycling route is 12.4 kilometers long, passes through Stare Czaple and runs entirely within the Kashubian Landscape Park. The place names along the route place Stare Czaple between Czapielski Młyn and Gołubie. On the section from Lake Zamkowisko to Gołubie, the cycling route follows the same trail as a marked hiking path.
The distinction is useful when planning your trips: the cycling route has a stated total length, while the shared trail with the hiking path is limited to the Lake Zamkowisko–Gołubie section. The Kashubian Hiking Trail also passes through Stare Czaple on the Krzeszna–Gołubie section. Its route was changed in 2004. Check the current trail markings before setting out. This gives you different reference points when choosing between cycling and hiking: a total length for the cycling route and named trail sections for hiking.
Village layout and Lake Buk
The former oval village layout by Lake Buk is partly preserved in Stare Czaple. This shape describes the arrangement of the village as a whole and draws attention to its overall layout, rather than just individual historic features. The landscape qualities and spatial structure of Stare Czaple and its immediate surroundings have also been preserved and remain discernible. The shore of Lake Buk is lined with trees. You can therefore consider the surviving settlement layout and the lakeshore landscape as two different reference points: one concerns the layout of the village, the other its transition to the lake.
Archaeology and historic features
Among the archaeological sites in the Kashubian Landscape Park is a Bronze Age barrow cemetery in Stare Czaple. The barrow at Stare Czaple is also included in the heritage register and lists of monuments. Another surviving feature is a brick wayside shrine dating from the early 20th century. The historical references therefore span the period from the Bronze Age to the early 20th century. The barrow and the shrine differ both in period and form: one is an archaeological feature, the other a brick structure. Together with the partly preserved village layout, they offer different starting points for exploring the village’s cultural history.
