Discover Widlino: Nature, Hiking and Cycling
Accommodation in Widlino
Widlino lies along the Radunia River, amid the fields and forests of the Kashubian Lake District. Specific local landmarks include a boulder protected as a natural monument, the “Szlak Wzgórz Szymbarskich” hiking trail and the “Żukowska Eska” cycling route. The town’s history adds to these connections with the landscape and trails. When planning, you can choose to focus to varying degrees on nature, hiking, cycling or historical aspects.
Landscape and Boulder
The boulder protected as a natural monument is a specific natural landmark in Widlino. Its circumference is 17 m; it is 6.2 m long, 4.5 m wide and 1.10 m high. These measurements give a fuller picture of its size than a height measurement alone could. The boulder lies along the path leading from plot No. 61 to the fields, 300 m from the buildings. Two different details are useful for finding it: the directions and the distance from the buildings.
Hiking through Widlino
The “Szlak Wzgórz Szymbarskich” hiking trail passes through Widlino on the Łapino–Widlino–Sulmin section. Its current route goes through Sulmin, Niestępowo and Widlino because the pedestrian bridge over the Radunia is still missing. The section and the current sequence of places provide different kinds of orientation: the first names Łapino, Widlino and Sulmin; the second also includes Niestępowo and reflects the bridge situation. If you plan to hike the trail, it is worth briefly checking the current route before setting out.
Cycling route and named stones
The “Żukowska Eska” cycling route is rated as moderate and follows Kashubian gravel roads, field tracks and forest paths. In Widlino, cyclists can take a detour of a few hundred metres from the route to visit the “Zaklęty Kamień”. It is not the same as the so-called “Diabelski Kamień”, which stands near Widlino’s old cholera cemetery. The rating and types of paths describe the cycling route; the detour identifies a specific place to visit in the town.
A historical connection
The first documented mention of Widlino dates from 1311. At that time, Karol z Trewiru granted the town knightly rights. The date is therefore associated with a specific historical event. If history influences your travel plans, Widlino offers a clearly dated point of reference that adds a historical perspective to your interest in nature and trails.
Hiking or cycling?
The details to consider when choosing between the activities vary. For hiking, the current sequence of places and the pedestrian bridge that is still missing are the main considerations; for the “Żukowska Eska”, the moderate difficulty, types of paths and detour to a destination in Widlino are relevant. This can help you decide whether you would prefer a hiking route through several towns or a cycling trip with a specific named place to visit.
