Marienwerder (Kwidzyn) offers striking brick architecture, traces of the city fortifications and various ways to spend time by the Liwa River. When planning your trip, you can choose from different focuses: the history of the Cathedral-Castle Complex, walks and bike rides, or activities around the historic Miłosna equestrian complex.

The Cathedral, Castle and City History

Kwidzyn Cathedral was built between 1310 and 1360 as a Gothic brick pseudo-basilica. The Cathedral-Castle Complex, built in the mid-14th century, includes the crypt of the Grand Masters and the Chapel of Blessed Dorota of Mątowy in the cathedral. A mosaic from 1380 depicts Saint John the Evangelist and a kneeling bishop. If you would like to visit the cathedral and its crypt in a wheelchair, notify the site at least one day in advance. Confirm the access arrangements before your visit.

The castle includes the Gdanisko, a latrine tower dating from 1384 that is described as unique in Europe. The Castle Museum presents ethnographic collections on the material culture of the Dolne Powiśle region. As of September 8, 2026, the castle had been temporarily closed to visitors since early September 2026; check visitor access before making plans. The Fermor Palace represents a later chapter in the city’s history: it was built from 1758 to 1763 for the Russian governor, General Wilhelm Fermor.

Historical traces can also be found beyond the complex. Irregular fragments of brick and fieldstone from the defensive walls remain along Gdańska Street, between Górna and Batalionów Chłopskich streets. The city walking tour starts at the railway station in the city center, on Kościuszki Street.

On Foot, by the River and by Bike

The Liwa has riverside areas for walking, as well as sports and tennis courts. The green-marked Napoleonic Trail passes through Kwidzyn. Check the condition of the trails locally before setting out. If you prefer to cycle, you can plan a ride on the Dolina Dolnej Wisły cycling route, which also passes through Kwidzyn. Another bike trip runs from Kwidzyn railway station to Mareza. The city walking tour goes on foot through Kwidzyn; the bike trip extends as far as Mareza.

Kayaking is another option on the Liwa. A marked kayak route follows the Liwa, which flows through Kwidzyn and the surrounding area. One described route runs from Brokowo to Przystań Kwidzyn on Mickiewicz Street, next to the riverside recreation facilities. Water levels affect whether the route is navigable. The “Przystań Kwidzyn” kayak rental offers numerous routes of varying difficulty; check seasonal opening times and water conditions in advance.

Horse Riding and Outings in Miłosna

Miłosna is a historic equestrian complex in Kwidzyn, with a history dating back to 1788. It offers riding lessons for children, young people and adults, from a first introduction to horses to trail riding. The grounds also have two modern, safe playgrounds. An outdoor hippodrome offers year-round opportunities to ride, train and prepare for sport; check the access arrangements before your visit.

Miłosna also offers carriage, wagon and sleigh rides. As these rides are seasonal, check availability before making plans. When choosing a hotel in Marienwerder, you can first consider which aspect of the trip matters most to you: historic buildings, trails and water, or a stay with horse-riding activities.
