Marienburg: Castle, Museums and the Nogat
Accommodation in Marienburg
If you are looking for a hotel in Marienburg, you can tailor your trip to your interests: castle history and city museums sit alongside experiences on the Nogat, craft activities and seasonal meeting places. The locations and activities offer different focuses and help you organize your travel plans.
Castle and City History
Malbork Castle was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. The Muzeum Miasta Malborka is housed in a historic villa at ul. Tadeusza Kościuszki 54 in Malbork. The town thus brings together castle history and a museum offering its own perspective on Malbork.
The reconstructed figure of the Madonna and Child is more than eight metres tall and covered with over 300,000 mosaic tesserae. More than 60 percent of the figure consists of original sections recovered from the ruins of the postwar period. A miniature of the castle at ul. Józefa Piłsudskiego is a faithful 1:30-scale replica of the castle as it was in 1938.
The route of the Zewnętrzne Muzeum Fortyfikacji runs along the restored eastern and western town walls. It includes a presentation of the Old Town as a virtual tour featuring archival photographs, postcards and artistic depictions from different periods. A viewpoint looks out over the western defensive walls and the Nogat; the route also includes a walk along the riverside promenade by the western walls. This route brings historical views together with views of the river and fortifications.
Crafts, Natural History and Other Topics
The educational trail at Dinopark features moving dinosaurs, dragons, a Neanderthal village with mammoths and a talking tree. Dinopark also has a fossil museum with plant and animal fossils as well as a dinosaur skeleton. Szkoła Łacińska offers workshops at an open-air museum of traditional crafts, and includes an observatory and a planetarium.
At Ceramika Malborska, participants can make their own ceramic tile from scratch and paint it with cobalt oxide. Workshops are held in small groups or for school and tour groups; individual travelers are also welcome. Advance booking is required. Muzeum Miasta Malborka also offers museum classes for school and preschool groups; advance confirmation may be required. These activities differ from visiting an exhibition: the focus is on workshops and museum classes.
Exploring the Nogat
A kayaking route on the Nogat passes through the Biała Góra Nature Reserve, the Nogat River Landscape Protection Area, and the Las Łęgowy nad Nogatem and Las Mątawski nature reserves. Via the Jagielloński Canal, the Nogat provides a navigable connection to Elbląg and the Elbląg Canal, as well as a connection to the Vistula Lagoon.
Rejsy Malbork offers an approximately 30-minute sightseeing boat trip departing from the landing stage by the castle. The boats remain in Malbork throughout the season; the service is seasonal. Check the latest sailing dates before your trip if you plan to take this tour.
Seasonal Specialties
Sklepy Cynamonowe is a seasonally open market for regional specialties, set in an interwar-era atmosphere. Local drinks are also offered there seasonally, accompanied by prewar popular songs. The market and boat trip offer different seasonal experiences; check current opening and sailing dates in advance. The themes of castle and city history, the Nogat and seasonal offerings give you different ways to plan your stay in Marienburg.
