Piece lies along National Road 22, about two kilometres west of the village of Kaliska. The building history of the Kociewie house, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Izydora Gulgowski Trail are important landmarks for finding your way around the village. They bring together local architecture and church history with a specific route. Piece therefore offers a clear focus for travellers who want to take regional buildings and their historical context into account during their stay.

Timber construction in Piece

A thatched Kociewie porch house in Piece dates from 1885. The wooden Kociewie house at ul. 6 Marca 14, on the corner with ul. Okrężna, is dated to the 19th century and is listed in the Pomeranian Voivodeship heritage register under number 875. Its regional designation, wooden construction and precise date provide several points of reference for understanding the building. Its address places it at a junction that is also important to the route of the Izydora Gulgowski Trail.

Church and parish history

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was built between 1911 and 1914. Construction began on 16 July 1911 on Czubnica Hill, and the work was completed in 1914. Franz Kunst designed the building in the Neo-Baroque style and also supervised its construction. The church has a distinctive tower. At that time, it was equipped with a thirteen-stop Walcker organ.

The establishment of the parish came later in the history of the village: on 16 December 1922, Augustyn Rosentreter, then Bishop of Chełmno, founded the parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Piece. This makes it possible to distinguish the church’s construction and the establishment of the parish as two separate historical stages. The church and rectory at ul. Kościelna 3 are listed in the heritage register under number 1909.

Another listed landmark is the Catholic cemetery between ul. Kościelna and ul. Zielona. It is also recorded in the heritage register under number 1909. Its location between the two streets should be distinguished from the address of the rectory at ul. Kościelna 3: the church and rectory are part of the church complex, while the cemetery occupies a separate place in Piece’s street layout.

The Izydora Gulgowski Trail through Piece

In 1997, the Izydora Gulgowski Trail was rerouted so that it ran directly from Kaliska to Piece and then to the Gulgowski House in Iwiczno. In the Piece area, it follows ul. Działkowa to National Road 22, then continues along the unpaved ul. Okrężna, ul. 6 Marca and ul. Szkolna towards Iwiczno. This sequence of streets provides a practical guide if you want to follow the trail through Piece.

The listed wooden cottage no. 14 stands at the junction of ul. Okrężna and ul. 6 Marca. There is also a chapel dedicated to St John of Nepomuk on ul. 6 Marca, at kilometre 2.5. The cottage at the junction and the chapel at the kilometre marker are separate landmarks along these streets. The trail’s rerouting in 1997 describes its historical development; check current trail conditions locally.

Piece can thus be understood from several distinct perspectives: the Kociewie house points to timber construction and an earlier building date, the church offers a more precisely dated history of its construction and parish, and the trail follows specific street sections through the village. National Road 22 and Piece’s location about two kilometres west of Kaliska add a geographical reference point to help orient you.
