Godziszewo is a destination for travelers who want to shape their stay around its waterside landscape, trails or regional architectural history. If you are looking for a hotel in Godziszewo, it helps to decide in advance which of these interests you most: Lake Godziszewskie and the Styna shape the landscape, while the marked Jezior-Kociewskich Trail and the Church of St. John of Nepomuk offer other specific points of interest.

Landscape and orientation

Lake Godziszewskie lies within the villages of Godziszewo, Demlin and Obozin. Godziszewo is also located on the Styna and by the large lake. Lake Godziszewskie offers visitors relaxation and recreational activities by the water. The lake and river therefore give the area two distinct landscape features: a large body of water and the course of the Styna.

The terrain also shapes the surroundings. Godziszewo has a hilly landscape with numerous elevations and depressions formed by the Baltic glaciation. Święta Góra, at 105.7 meters above sea level, is the highest elevation in Godziszewo. The descriptions of the terrain thus range from the extensive lakeside landscape to a clearly identified high point in the area.

The road connections are also relevant for orientation: two main roads run through Godziszewo. The route between Starogard Gdański and Gdańsk runs from south to north; the road between Skarszewy and Tczew runs from west to east. These directions help place Godziszewo within the local road network.

Water and trails

The northern section of the Jezior-Kociewskich Trail runs between Skarszewy and Starogard Gdański. It is marked in red and is 38.2 kilometers long. At kilometer 11.5, the trail passes Lake Godziszewskie; at kilometer 11.6, it passes the Styna. The kilometer markers distinguish the two bodies of water along the route. If you are factoring the trail into your plans, check current local conditions before setting out.

The Styna is also important for fishing. From Lake Godziszewskie to its mouth, it is significant for fisheries; there are three fishing districts along the river, and the entire Styna is a fishing area. This means lakeside recreation and the river’s role in fishing are distinct aspects of the waters in and around Godziszewo.

Architectural and local history

The present-day Church of St. John of Nepomuk was built in 1748 as a single-nave Baroque building on a small rise. Its furnishings include an original Rococo interior, considered among the most valuable in Kociewie. The building and its interior thus bring together two distinct art-historical features: Baroque church architecture and Rococo design.

The church porch contains a Renaissance tomb for Jan Wiesiołowski and his wife, Justyna z Branickich. The tomb adds a specific connection to two people known by name to the building’s history. It is a separate historical detail from the architecture and Rococo interior of the building.

The earlier history of the area can also be described with caution: finds of hand-formed pottery suggest that a settlement in Godziszewo may already have existed in the 8th century, in the early Middle Ages. A Roman Catholic cemetery dating from the beginning of the 20th century is recorded in the monument inventory. Former mill-related structures have also survived along the Styna. These traces reveal different layers of the area's history, from possible early settlement to structures from more recent local history.
