Nowy Wiec: Village History and Memorial Sites
Accommodation in Nowy Wiec
Nowy Wiec is a medieval linear village on the Rutkownica stream. The village’s history can be explored through its settlement form, a historic rural settlement layout, and several memorial sites. There is also a roadside shrine at the entrance to the village and the Skarszewski Trail, whose route and length provide practical guidance when choosing excursions.
Village Structure and Roadside Shrine
The term “linear village” refers to the medieval settlement’s elongated form. Its location on the Rutkownica stream adds a landscape feature to this description of the village. The historic rural settlement layout of Nowy Wiec, within the historic settlement area, is also listed as a WEZ heritage object. Thus, the village’s form and settlement structure stand alongside individual buildings and memorial sites as historical features.
At the entrance to Nowy Wiec from the direction of Skarszewy is a roadside shrine dating from the late 19th century. It was rebuilt in 2006 and is listed as a WEZ/GEZ heritage object. Its date of origin and its reconstruction mark two distinct stages in its building history.
Memorial Sites and Historical Context
The memorial cemetery commemorates the victims of German crimes during the Second World War. It contains the remains of Poles murdered by the German Selbstschutz between 1939 and 1944. A stone memorial plaque lists the names of identified victims, including clergy and residents of the region. The memorial site thus connects remembrance with specific names and regional ties. The cemetery is associated with Kociewie and the Starogard Lakeland. Its simple, rural setting close to nature invites quiet reflection.
The history of the village also includes the farm of Władysław Wiecki: in October and November 1939, it housed a detention site and an execution site run by the Selbstschutz.
Marta Wiecka in Nowy Wiec
Marta Wiecka was born in Nowy Wiec on 12 January 1874. She was the third of 13 children of the wealthy landowner Marcello Wiecki and his wife, Paolina Kamrowska Wiecka. The monument to Marta Wiecka is classified as a tourist attraction and an item of tangible cultural heritage; it also belongs to the category of monuments and memorial plaques. Her birthplace and the monument offer distinct biographical and cultural connections to the village.
