Discover Dirschau: Vistula history and the old town
Accommodation in Dirschau
Dirschau (Tczew) tells a story of the Vistula, exceptional engineering and a medieval town center. The Muzeum Wisły, historic churches and a route along the former town walls each offer a different perspective. You can plan your stay around the topics that interest you most: river history, architecture, exhibitions or time outdoors.
Vistula history and bridges
The Muzeum Wisły in Tczew is Poland’s largest museum dedicated to the history of the Vistula. The Vistula bridges are another defining landmark in the city’s history and are considered a special attraction. The first road bridge was built between 1851 and 1857. At 837 meters long, it was among the longest bridges in the world at the time. The Tczew Bridge has been recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers as an international landmark of civil engineering. Together, the museum and bridges offer two perspectives on the subject: the history of the river and the development of bridge building.
Churches, art and the old town
The Parish Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is Tczew’s oldest historic building. It dates from the 13th century and preserves 15th-century frescoes. It is both a place of worship and a gallery of medieval and modern art. The former Dominican Church of St. Stanislaus Kostka represents a different architectural period: this Gothic building was constructed in the 14th century and has a distinctive octagonal tower. The reconstructed Dutch windmill is another of the city’s notable buildings. Dating from 1890, it is distinguished by its rare five-sail arrangement and rotating cap.
The medieval street plan of the old town remains largely unchanged. The narrow historic streets of Garncarska, Kościelna, Podmurna, Rybacka and Zamkowa still bear their old names. Plac Hallera is the central square of the old town. If you prefer to explore the city’s history along a route, the Fortification Trail offers another point of orientation: it begins on Podmurna Street and follows the course of the medieval town wall. The wall was 1,300 meters long and had five gates and twelve towers. The trail leads to a viewpoint and an amphitheater near Rybacka Street.
Parks and events
The city park covers about 15 hectares and has an amphitheater and a concert shell. At Bulwar Nadwiślański, several playgrounds and a large castle form a combined play and recreation complex. Cultural and patriotic events, picnics, folk festivals and sports competitions are also held there. The park and Bulwar offer different ways to spend time outdoors: the city park includes music and events, while Bulwar also focuses on play and recreation.
For art and changing exhibition themes, Fabryka Sztuk is another place to visit. It holds dozens of different exhibitions each year, including ethnographic presentations and exhibitions of old and contemporary art. The In Memoriam Festival Grzegorz Ciechowski has been held in Tczew, the artist’s hometown, since 2002. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the announced dates for your travel period.
Cycling route and suitable accommodation
On Pomorska Street, a section of the cycling route connects to the city’s existing cycling network and forms part of the international EuroVelo route, the Vistula Cycling Route R9. The Tczew section of the Vistula Cycling Route, or EuroVelo 9, also includes a walk through the streets of the old town. This means you can take both the cycling route and city sightseeing into account when planning your trip. Check the route you intend to take when planning your journey.
When looking for a hotel in Dirschau, you can start by considering which aspects of the city you want to shape your stay: Vistula history and bridges, churches and old-town streets, exhibitions, or routes and green spaces. Then choose a specific hotel location based on the places you want to visit. This lets you compare accommodation with your own travel plans without trying to fit every interest into a single itinerary.
