Visitors who choose Dankowice as a destination will find several distinct points of interest: Neo-Gothic church architecture, historic memorial sites, a path along a stream and a cycling route through five villages. There are also local traditions associated with carp farming and cheese-making. These themes may help you choose a hotel: consider whether you are most interested in architectural history, local traditions or routes through the surrounding area.

Church and Memorial Sites

The Church of St. Adalbert is a single-nave Neo-Gothic building. It was built between 1896 and 1898 and consecrated in 1905. The construction period and consecration mark two distinct stages in its history. The term “single-nave” describes the church’s basic layout; the Neo-Gothic style describes its architectural design.

The so-called Swedish Cross stands at the intersection of Oświęcimska and Browarnik streets and can be visited there. According to local tradition, it marks the burial place of victims of a 1655 skirmish involving Swedish troops in the area of the Dankowickie Potoki. The cross’s history is therefore explicitly a local tradition. Another historical landmark is the Austrian border post on the square between the church and the rectory. The two memorial sites have different associations: the cross is linked to a traditional account of wartime events, while the border post marks an Austrian border.

Na Kopcu is another local point of interest: this naturally elevated spot is associated with a legend that Święty Wojciech celebrated Mass there. Together with the church and the two memorial sites, it offers several distinct points of connection to the village’s history, though they do not form a set walking route.

Getting Around on Foot or by Bike

Groble is a path along the embankment on the right bank of the Dankówka stream. It leads from the center towards Góra. The Wilamowski Garden Trail cycling route, number 006, is a circuit through Dankowice, Wilamowice, Starą Wieś, Pisarzowice and Hecznarowice; it is marked in blue. The main difference between the two routes is their course: Groble follows the stream in one direction, while the cycling route connects five villages in a loop.

About 92 percent of the Wilamowski Garden Trail runs along paved public local roads. One of the four garden complexes directly along the route is in Dankowice. If you would like to include it in your plans, check current visiting options in advance. Signage and trail conditions may also change, so it is worth checking the latest information before setting out for a ride or walk.

Local History and Regional Connections

Dankowice’s culinary history spans two distinct periods. The village received a privilege for so-called fish ponds as early as the reign of Kazimierz Jagiellończyk; since then, Dankowice has been known for carp farming. During the period of Austrian administration, the village was also known for making Swiss cheese. These two traditions point to different chapters in local history and complement the story told by its architectural and memorial heritage.

Transport links also provide a sense of the area: a road connecting Oświęcim with Czechowice-Dziedzice and Bielsko-Biała runs through the center of Dankowice. The village also has a railway line connecting Kraków with Zebrzydowice on the state border. Road and rail thus offer two different regional connections. Together with the local buildings, the path along the Dankówka and the cycling route, they give a concrete picture of what you can consider when choosing Dankowice as your destination.
