The Early Medieval hillfort is Międzyświeć’s defining historical landmark. Its rarity in the region, its location above the Bładnica, and the traditions surrounding Piekiełko offer different ways to explore the history of the town. This makes it possible to understand Międzyświeć through a specific structure, its landscape, and oral tradition.

A rare Early Medieval site

The Early Medieval hillfort from the tribal period in Międzyświeć is the only site of its kind in Cieszyn County and one of only a few in the Silesian Voivodeship. The authentic remains are associated with the Slavic tribe of the Golęszyce. They are considered a valuable source for the study of Early Medieval hillfort architecture and regional history. Hillfort architecture draws attention to the form of the fortification; the connection with the Golęszyce adds the history of a Slavic tribe to this architectural perspective.

The site’s rarity can be considered on two scales: it is the only one of its kind in Cieszyn County, and one of only a few in the Silesian Voivodeship. This distinction makes it possible to separate its local significance from its broader regional context.

Its location in the Vistula Valley

The remains of the hillfort lie on the upper terrace of the broad ancient Vistula valley, above its tributary, the Bładnica. This brings together two geographical features: the Vistula Valley and the site’s position above the Bładnica. The landscape setting adds a geographical perspective to the site’s history. The Vistula refers to the valley, while the Bładnica is the tributary above which the remains lie.

The Golęszyce and the Bavarian Geographer

The so-called Bavarian Geographer, compiled around 845, recorded the Golęszyce as having five forts or fortified districts. One was the fort at Międzyświeć, the easternmost of them; it probably guarded a crossing over the Vistula. The date of the Bavarian Geographer is approximate. The fort’s eastern position places it within the context described, while its possible function at the river is explicitly a matter of probability.

Oral tradition

According to oral tradition, the legend of the sunken hillfort of Piekiełko was passed down for centuries; the site was always called “gródek.” The traditional name and the legend offer different perspectives: “gródek” refers to the site, while Piekiełko evokes the hillfort’s narrated past. Alongside the fortification itself, local storytelling is therefore also part of Międzyświeć’s historical picture.

Putting Międzyświeć in context as a destination

If you are looking for a destination with a specific historical focus, Międzyświeć brings together early hillfort architecture, the history of the Golęszyce, a distinctive riverside location, and local tradition. These themes give your choice a clear focus: you can decide whether the region’s Early Medieval history and the history of fortifications match your travel interests.
