Dąbrowa Górnicza combines lake landscapes and protected nature with traces of regional history. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: the Pogoria Lakes, marked routes through varied landscapes, or the Muzeum Sztygarka. Whichever you choose to include, it gives your hotel search a specific theme.

Pogoria Lakes and routes

The four Pogoria Lakes are used for tourism and recreation. Marked trails and cycling routes run around each of the four lakes and are also suitable for younger children. Pogoria III is suitable for sailing and windsurfing. The green-marked Szlak XXV-lecia leads to the waters of Pogoria II and Pogoria III and runs for about 18.5 kilometres within Dąbrowa Górnicza. These details offer different options for your plans: cycling routes around the lakes alongside a longer marked trail leading to two Pogoria lakes.

Other marked routes have their own points of interest. The red Szlak Metalurgów is 13 kilometres long and leads to a historic church on Wzgórze Gołonoskie, former quarries, an old lime kiln and sites of former clay pits. The yellow-marked Szlak Pustynny PTTK is 28.5 kilometres long. It starts in Błędów and crosses the Błędów Desert area from Mount Jałowce to Ryczów. The different lengths and destinations can help you choose routes based on the landscape and history that interest you most.

Landscapes and protected nature

A considerable part of the Błędów Desert, also known as the “Polish Sahara”, lies within Dąbrowa Górnicza. The desert is Central Europe’s largest complex of inland dunes. You will encounter a different type of landscape at Wzgórze Gołonoskie, which is legally protected as a natural and scenic complex. Zielona Park covers 67 hectares and is home to the largest concentration of oaks in the Dąbrowa Basin.

There are also trails through wetlands for nature watching: a network of boardwalks leads to places that would otherwise be inaccessible. Check the condition of the boardwalks before your visit. At the documentation site on Wzgórze Srocza Góra in Strzemieszyce, there is also an educational trail and information boards. Here, too, it is a good idea to check local conditions before making plans.

Church and industrial history

In Gołonóg, the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Anthony (Narodzenia Najświętszej Marii Panny i św. Antoniego) was founded in 1675. It is a different historical landmark from the former extraction sites along the Szlak Metalurgów. Those interested in industrial history can find archaeological finds from the early medieval production settlement in Łośniu at the Muzeum Sztygarka. Lead and silver were smelted there.

The Muzeum Sztygarka also presents the region’s industrial history and traditions, as well as the everyday lives of miners and smelter workers. Its local ethnography section explores the folk culture, folklore and customs of the Dąbrowa Basin. The museum’s programme thus brings together archaeological and ethnographic topics, ranging from an early medieval production settlement to regional everyday life and cultural traditions.

When choosing where to go within the city, you can first decide whether lakes and cycling routes, the desert landscape, or history and museum exhibits should take priority.
