Knurów offers a range of places to explore during a stay focused on cultural history. These include sacred buildings, a company housing estate built for miners, and a park that was formerly used as a cemetery. The selection is rounded out by the salt grotto, or brine graduation tower structure, regarded as a local landmark, and the seasonal Leśne Zacisze outdoor swimming pool. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between the focus on religious history and industrial culture and the focus on seasonal leisure.

Sacred Architectural History

The Chapel of St. Barbara is considered the oldest sacred building in Knurów. It is Neo-Gothic and was built in 1887 with funds provided by Paulina Güttler, the owner of the local gunpowder factory. The building thus brings together a clear date, an architectural classification and a connection to local industry.

The Church of St. Anthony of Padua is located in Krywałd. It is a historic property protected by the Voivodeship conservator of monuments. The church houses a copy of the Piękna Madonna z Knurowa, a sculpture dating from 1420. Services in honor of the Piękna Madonna are held there regularly, once a month. The year 1420 refers to the sculpture, not the church. Two distinct sacred points of reference thus stand side by side: the chapel, as Knurów’s oldest sacred building, and the church in Krywałd, with its Madonna copy, services and heritage protection.

Industrial History in the III Kolonia Robotnicza

The III Kolonia Robotnicza is a company housing estate built for miners. It was established between 1903 and 1921 along a road running through Knurów. The houses draw on traditional Silesian building traditions and English models; each dwelling had its own garden plot. The estate can therefore be understood in terms of both its industrial purpose and its design and associated garden plots. Unlike the Neo-Gothic chapel, this is not a single sacred building, but a residential estate with its own construction period and architectural character.

Places Undergoing Change and Seasonal Leisure

The historic cemetery on Spacerowa Street is now Park Pamięci. Its former use as a cemetery and its present designation as a park bring together two different periods. The salt grotto, or brine graduation tower structure, on Szpitalna Street is regarded as a landmark and attraction in Knurów. These offer two different perspectives: Park Pamięci reflects a change in use, while the graduation tower structure is a local landmark.

Leśne Zacisze outdoor swimming pool is located in Knurów and operates seasonally. In connection with the system launch in 2024, a Metrorower bike-sharing station was listed at the pool. If you plan to use the bike-sharing service, check its current availability before your trip. You should also take the pool’s seasonal operation into account when planning your dates. When choosing when to stay, you can therefore distinguish between focusing on local history and enjoying seasonal leisure.
