Ruda Śląska: Workers’ Colonies, Blast Furnace and Green Spaces
Accommodation in Ruda Śląska
Ruda Śląska reveals different facets of industrial history: workers’ colonies, a historic railway station complex and a blast furnace almost 76 metres high each make their own mark. Revitalised green spaces and leisure activities at Aquadrom add to the picture. For planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the main themes: residential estates showcase workers’ settlement architecture, industrial structures tell the story of industry, and parks offer a different kind of outdoor experience.
Workers’ Colonies and Architecture
The Ficinus workers’ colony combines historic residential buildings with visitor attractions. More than 90 percent of its housing stock has been preserved; it is also one of the oldest examples of workers’ settlement architecture in Upper Silesia. The colony includes a historic pedestrian area, a museum exhibition on traditional Silesian cuisine and a gallery featuring people associated with Ruda Śląska. So alongside the architecture, the focus here is also on regional cuisine and people connected with the city.
Another workers’ settlement is the Carl-Emanuel colony. It comprises 15 workers’ houses along Wolności, Raciborska and Zabrzańska streets. Together with Ficinus, it makes residential buildings a distinct theme of the trip; the two colonies can be seen as different examples of workers’ settlement architecture.
Chebzie also offers a glimpse of a historic building now put to use: the Stacja Biblioteka is located in the railway station complex. The complex was built between 1897 and 1899. Stacja Biblioteka is also part of the Industrial Monuments Route of the Silesian Voivodeship.
Blast Furnace and Other Cultural Sites
The Wielki Piec at the “Pokój” Steelworks brings a different aspect of industrial heritage to the fore. The blast furnace was built between 1966 and 1968 and is almost 76 metres high. It was entered in the register of monuments in 2012 and has been part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) since 2020.
The Maksymilian Chrobok Municipal Museum presents temporary exhibitions on ethnography, history and visual arts. If a particular exhibition is important to your plans, check the current programme in advance, as exhibitions change. St Joseph’s Parish is a distinct religious landmark: it was elevated to the status of a diocesan shrine on 30 April 2010.
Green Spaces and Nature
The Rudzki Tract connects the districts of Wirek and Nowy Bytom through a network of revitalised green spaces and parks. It transformed degraded industrial areas into public spaces and supports travel between the districts with micromobility options. Individual facilities may change; check the latest information if you plan to use specific facilities.
An educational trail is located in a five-hectare natural area between Bujoczka and Kościelna streets. Another specific natural landmark is in the Ruda district: at the intersection of Wolności and Kościelna streets stands a boulder of coarse-grained granite, protected as a natural monument since 1960. The natural area and the boulder offer two clearly identified points of interest for a trip where natural features matter alongside architecture.
Leisure and Getting Around
Aquadrom in Ruda Śląska has areas for leisure, sports and sauna bathing. Its listed attractions include seven twisting slides, a wild-water channel, an artificial wave, several whirlpools, a children’s area, four different saunas and a seven-metre-high diving tube. This makes it quite different from the city’s historic sites. As individual attractions may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting.
Ruda and Chebzie railway stations are also relevant for getting around the city: they are the two stations in Ruda Śląska on the Wrocław–Kraków railway line. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable. RUDZKA mAPPKA, developed by the museum, guides users to the main attractions and includes them in interactive outdoor games. Check whether the app is available before using it. For road directions, Aquadrom’s operator estimates that it takes about five minutes to reach the venue from the A4 motorway and 15 minutes from the Drogowa Trasa Średnicowa.
