The TAZ workers’ settlement, the SOWA interactive science centre and medieval castle ruins offer different focal points for a trip to Zawiercie and Zawiercie County. The county lies in southern Poland, in the northeastern part of the Silesian Voivodeship, in the heart of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, also known as Wyżyna Krakowsko-Częstochowska. Zawiercie is an important rail and road transport hub for the county. For specific connections, it is worth checking the relevant timetables.

Jura Castles and Marked Trails

The ruins of Ogrodzieniec Castle in Podzamcze are a 14th-century fortification on the Szlak Orlich Gniazd, the Trail of the Eagles’ Nests. Two named routes also pass the ruins of Bąkowiec Castle in Skarżyce: the red-marked Szlak Orlich Gniazd and the blue-marked Szlak Warowni Jurajskich, the Jura Castles Trail. The castles and trail names offer a concrete way to explore the cultural history of the Jura. As markings can change on site, check the signs during your hike.

Another destination is the ruins in the Smoleń Nature Reserve. The castle dates from the 14th century; a Gothic entrance gate has survived. Visitors can access a hiking trail and areas within the ruins: the eastern and western outer wards, the upper castle and the castle tower. Check the local access rules before your visit.

Urban History and Hands-on Experiences

In Zawiercie, the TAZ workers’ settlement tells the story of a building period that lasted from 1880 to 1910. It is listed as a unique monument with the Voivodeship Heritage Conservator in Katowice under number 1428/91. Its status and long construction period make the settlement a distinctive focus alongside the region’s castles: here, the focus is on a workers’ settlement; there, on a fortified structure. This distinction can help you understand the different historical themes of a stay.

If you would rather try things out than simply look at them, the small SOWA science centre is located in Zawiercie railway station, at ul. 3 Maja 4. At research stations, visitors can explore phenomena independently, change parameters, make observations and experiment. Its interactive format offers a different emphasis from a collection of historical memorabilia, making it a good choice as a separate activity.

The Municipal Museum Room has been part of the Municipal and County Library since 30 April 1997. It collects, preserves and displays memorabilia from the Zawiercie region. At the Pałacyk Szymańskiego, the building serves several purposes across different floors: the attic houses the Museum Room and a branch of the Social Music Centres, the ground floor houses the city library, and the basement is home to a private restaurant.

Activities by Season

In Zawiercie County, climbing is popular from spring to autumn, particularly in Podlesice, Rzędkowice, Podzamcze and Ryczów. Local climbing restrictions may vary by location. Another way to explore the area on foot is the first variant of the Szlak 3 Rzek, the Three Rivers Trail: it starts at Zawiercie railway station and runs through Blanowice, Kromołów and Bzów. This offers a seasonal activity across several named locations alongside a specifically described trail option for different day plans.

The time of year also affects the options. In Morsko, in the municipality of Zawiercie, there are ski slopes for winter use; cross-country skiing is possible around Podlesice. In summer, swimming areas are open in Siamoszyce, Dzibice, Kostkowice and Przyłubsko, in the municipality of Kroczyce. Check local information about seasonal activities before visiting. These activities are not all based in the same place: Morsko, the area around Podlesice and the swimming areas in Kroczyce municipality offer different planning options.

Regional Cuisine and a Salt Cave

At the “Pod Berkową Górą” educational farm in Podlesice, a two- to three-hour course teaches participants how to prepare “kluchy połom bite,” a traditional potato dish. The course combines regional cuisine with a hands-on introduction to a specific dish. If you are interested, include the course as a separate part of your itinerary and check current visitor arrangements in advance.

Another option is the salt cave, or salt mist tower, on the grounds of the Sports and Recreation Centre in Zawiercie, at ul. Moniuszki. Together with the science centre, historical sites and seasonal activities, it illustrates the different ways to shape a stay.
