Dukla brings together themes from several eras: the history of the Sanctuary of Saint John of Dukla, the late-Baroque Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, Jewish memorial sites and the seasonal avenue of black locust trees. There is also a mountain bike rental service and a climbing wall at MOSiR. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between buildings and memorial sites, a seasonal natural attraction, and leisure facilities whose current availability or access you should check in advance.

Churches and architectural history in Dukla

The first church at the Sanctuary of Saint John of Dukla was made of wood, built in 1741, and funded by Józef Mniszech, the then-owner of Dukla. The brick church and monastery of the sanctuary were built between 1761 and 1764. Around two decades separate the construction of the first church from the start of work on the brick buildings.

The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene was built in the late-Baroque style. It has three naves and a single-bay chancel with a semicircular apse. The three naves define the layout of the church interior; a bay is a section of the chancel. A work made of pink and black marble in 1773 inside the church depicts Maria Amalia in an exceptionally realistic way.

Jewish heritage and historic sites

The ruins of a synagogue built in 1758 stand on Cegrowska Street. It was destroyed by the Nazis during the war. The building and its destruction belong to different historical periods; the ruins mark the history of this synagogue in Dukla.

The Jewish cemetery lies on the southern edge of the town, to the right of the road towards Barwinek. It consists of an old section, established at the beginning of the 18th century, and an adjoining new section, in use since around 1870. The two sections differ both in their dates and in their position relative to each other: the new section adjoins the old one.

The synagogue ruins and the cemetery represent different forms of Jewish heritage in Dukla: a destroyed religious building on the one hand, and a cemetery with two adjoining sections on the other.

Black locust blossom and leisure activities

The avenue of black locust trees lies at the entrance to Dukla from the direction of Krosno. It is especially attractive during its blooming period in late May and the first half of June, when it is also particularly fragrant. The exact timing can vary from year to year. If the blossom is important to your trip, allow some flexibility rather than planning around a single day.

At the MOSiR Dukla sports facilities, mountain bikes are available to rent. The rental fleet includes ten mountain bikes, two of which are e-bikes. Check current availability before your trip if you would like to use a bike. There is also a climbing wall in the MOSiR Dukla sports hall; check access before your visit.

One stop on the ecological and historical educational trail leads to the Bernardine monastery church of Saint John of Dukla and the sculptural composition “Krzyż Pojednania.” This stop therefore includes both a religious building and a named sculptural composition.
