Accommodation in Gmina Lubaczów
In the broader destination of Lubaczów, architectural history, museum themes, and commemorative heritage come together. The town hall, castle-and-park complex, churches, cemeteries, and Muzeum Kresów offer different points of interest as you look for hotels in Gmina Lubaczów and plan a themed stay.
Architecture between the town hall, traces of the castle, and churches
Lubaczów Town Hall stands among adjoining buildings on the western side of the square. The plastered brick building has an upper storey and a gabled roof covered with sheet metal. Its L-shaped plan encloses a courtyard. In 2011, the town hall was entered in the heritage register of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship under registration number A-568. This building brings together a distinctive floor plan and a historic register entry.
The castle-and-park complex preserves the oldest traces of a castle on the Sołotwa and Lubaczówka rivers, as well as remnants of earlier small-town wooden and stone buildings. The park is used for recreation and leisure. It hosts cultural events and educational activities about the history of the region and the Kresy of the former Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The park includes avenues, paths, waterways, and ponds. Its old-growth trees include black alders and individual small-leaved lime trees, which are protected as natural monuments.
The Greek Catholic Church of St. Nicholas was built in 1883 to a design by Ukrainian architect Wasyl Nahirny, on the site of an older wooden church. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; the presbytery has a three-sided end, and a dome rises above the crossing of the nave and transept. The masonry bell tower was built in 1843 and altered in 1862. Another church-and-bell-tower ensemble is located on Grunwaldzka Street. In 1988, it was entered in the heritage register of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship under registration number A-316.
Museum and cemeteries: regional history in detail
Muzeum Kresów in Lubaczów presents permanent and temporary exhibitions about the Lubaczów region and the former Kresy of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Three halls are dedicated to permanent exhibitions: the history of the town and its region, the material culture of Lubaczów’s villages, and the history of the Kresy. There are two more halls for temporary exhibitions; the museum also has a library with a scholarly collection. If you are planning a visit, check the museum’s current visitor information for dates and possible closures.
Several dozen stone gravestones remain at the epidemic cemetery in Lubaczów, commemorating people who died of cholera; most date from 1916 to 1918. The cemetery also preserves stone tombstones from the folk-art legacy of the stonemasonry workshops in Brusno Stare, which operated until the 1940s. Several stone cholera gravestones stand in the eastern, epidemic section. An old stone cross is also located there. Dating from the turn of the 18th century, it was moved here from the now-vanished burial mound on Orzeszkowa Street.
The northern part of the cemetery on Cicha Street includes memorial graves for Polish soldiers under the command of Józef Kustroń, who fell in 1939, and Soviet soldiers who fell fighting the UPA. There is also a monument to the airmen of the 31st Reconnaissance Squadron of the “Karpaty” Army. Alongside its stone tombstones, the cemetery thus has another historical focus in these different memorial sites.
