The Bolestraszyce Arboretum, its plant collections, and the Natural History Museum give a stay in Bolestraszyce a botanical and natural history focus. The history of the manor and garden grounds, as well as a fort near the arboretum, add further points of interest. Nature, historical connections, and practical visit planning can therefore be considered separately.

The Arboretum: plants and local history

The arboretum was founded in 1975. Its collections include dendrological and pomological plants. These specialist terms refer to different areas of focus: dendrology studies woody plants, while pomology deals with fruit and fruit growing. This brings different perspectives on plants together. The arboretum is located on historic manor and garden grounds where Piotr Michałowski lived and worked in the mid-19th century. Botany and local history meet here, while remaining distinct themes of a stay.

Birds and habitats at the Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum is located on the ground floor of the manor house. Its exhibition “Chrońmy ptaki” (“Let’s Protect Birds”) features native bird species that breed in Poland. The exhibition organizes the birds by habitat: deciduous and coniferous forests, fields, woodlands, inland waters, and seas. The presentation is therefore structured not only around bird species, but also around their habitats. The title and layout emphasize different aspects: the focus is on the birds and, at the same time, on the environments to which the exhibition assigns them.

Educational trail and open-air museum

The arboretum includes the educational trail “Drzewa w Arboretum” (“Trees in the Arboretum”). It also has an open-air museum featuring trunks of “black oak” and other trees and shrubs. The trail takes trees as its subject, while the open-air museum focuses on tree and shrub trunks. Thus, the arboretum offers two distinct approaches to woody plants: a named educational trail and an outdoor exhibition.

Fort XIII b near the Arboretum

Fort XIII b Bolestraszyce is located near the arboretum. The uncovered historic fortifications include earthworks, a moat, walls, an access road, and gun emplacements. Work to open the fort to visitors is ongoing. If you are considering a detour, check in advance on the progress of preparations to open it to visitors. These fortifications and the ongoing work provide a separate historical point of interest alongside the arboretum’s plant and museum themes.

Plan your visit and journey

Guided tours of the arboretum and reservations for a campfire site are available by prior arrangement. If you are planning a guided tour or a campfire site, please arrange it in advance. An English-language arboretum guide mentions local buses toward Wyszatyce and a stop called Bolestraszyce-Arboretum. Before you travel, check whether the buses mentioned in the guide are currently running.
