Kalwaria Pacławska: Sanctuary, Chapels and Trails
Accommodation in Kalwaria Pacławska
Kalwaria Pacławska is a Franciscan sanctuary and monastery. Pilgrims come for the liturgy, devotional trails and prayer before the miraculous image of Our Lady of Kalwaria. For visitors, religious practice, as well as the history and architecture of the site, are central. Chapels, museums, an observation tower and trails offer different themes to consider when planning your trip.
Sanctuary and Historic Buildings
The history of Kalwaria Pacławska and its monastery dates back to 1660. After returning from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro decided to recreate in Poland places associated with the Passion of Christ. This historical connection explains the central role of devotional sites in Kalwaria Pacławska.
The Calvary chapel complex comprises 41 structures, mostly masonry but also including wooden buildings, as well as a wooden cross and three stone columns. The small, simple wooden chapel Pustelnia św. Marii Magdaleny has a shingle roof and stands on a hill where a rampart once stood. Remains of the earthworks are still visible there. Other wooden chapels include “Trzy Marie,” which dates from 1873 and was restored after 1945, and “U Prokli,” built in 1863.
The settlement also has its own distinctive architecture: many wooden houses are built using post-and-beam construction, with arcades. Some buildings in the Boyko style combine living and working areas. Post-and-beam construction uses vertical posts as a supporting frame; an arcade is an open, gallery-like passage along a building.
Trails and Views
From the observation tower, the view extends northeast across the Wiar Valley, nearby settlements, wooded hills and the border landscape. Access to the tower is seasonal and supervised; check the current visiting arrangements.
About half of the “Kalwaria Pacławska” nature and history trail runs through the “Kalwaria Pacławska” nature reserve. On this section, you may only walk on the designated trail. The routes described here have different points of reference: the John Paul II pilgrimage trail leads from Przemyśl to the sanctuary in Kalwaria Pacławska. The Way of the Cross begins at the “U Piłata” chapel in Gradusy and leads through the forest over Calvary to the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. If you plan to follow either route, check local route information before setting out.
Museums and Cultural Themes
The museums focus on different themes. The Kalwaria Museum presents the origins of Kalwaria Pacławska and the story of its establishment and development. Dedicated rooms focus on Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro, the founder of Kalwaria Pacławska, and Szczepan Józef Dwernicki, who developed the site. The Museum of Our Lady collects memorabilia related to the miraculous image; which items are displayed may change. As visiting arrangements for the Kalwaria Museum may change, check the latest information before your visit.
