Prömsel: Cultural Heritage and Landscapes
Accommodation in Prömsel
Prömsel brings together cultural heritage, protected landscapes and hiking trails. Przemyśl County lies in the foothills of the outer Carpathian arc; most of the county belongs to the Pogórze Przemyskie mesoregion. Krasiczyn Castle, the church in Posada Rybotycka and the Przemyśl Fortress represent different chapters in architectural and regional history. The landscape park, nature reserves and arboretum offer other points of interest.
Castles, a Fortified Church and a Fortress
Krasiczyn Castle dates from the 16th century and is considered one of Poland’s most valuable architectural monuments. A 9-hectare park surrounds the complex. This makes it possible to consider the architecture and parkland as two distinct aspects of the site.
Poland’s oldest brick fortified church, dating from the 15th century, stands in Posada Rybotycka. Fragments of 17th-century polychrome decoration have been preserved inside. The church offers a different architectural perspective from the castle: here, the fortified church design and surviving traces of color shape the impression.
The Przemyśl Fortress is also among the historical attractions of the county. It is one of Europe’s largest modern-era fortresses and a historical and tourist attraction for visitors to the Przemyśl region as well as the local population. Those interested in religious sites can visit the Sanctuary of the Passion of Christ and Our Lady in Kalwaria Pacławska. Religious celebrations take place there several times a year, attracting residents as well as pilgrims and tourists from Poland and Ukraine. Kalwaria Pacławska is also associated with an annual Passion play consisting of the parts “Wieczernik” and “Na krzyż z Nim.”
Protected Areas and Plant Diversity
The Pogórze Przemyskie Landscape Park covers 61,862 hectares and extends across several municipalities in Przemyśl County. Each nature reserve has its own focus: Reberce protects remnants of an original Carpathian forest near Wola Korzeniecka, Kraja and Łomna. Szachownica preserves the very rare fritillary flower in Krówniki. The Krępak Nature Reserve near Korzeniec in the municipality of Bircza covers 134.46 hectares; it protects the hill’s scenic value and a well-preserved stand of old fir and beech forest.
Other areas focus on specific habitats and plants. Brzoza Czarna covers 2.60 hectares in Reczpol and was established to preserve a natural stand of black birch. The Skarpa Jaksmanicka Fauna Reserve protects a large breeding colony of bee-eaters on a loess slope near the road in Siedliska. The 46.42-hectare Przełom Hołubli Forest Landscape Reserve extends across Korytniki and Wapowce; its purpose is to protect forest plant communities.
The Bolestraszyce Arboretum in the municipality of Żurawica, 7 kilometers north of Przemyśl, offers another kind of plant diversity. Its 12.8 hectares include a park, a pomological orchard, nurseries and a classicist manor house with a natural history museum. Visitors can see around 1,800 species, varieties and forms of trees and shrubs, as well as 1,200 species of herbaceous plants. The collection makes the arboretum a distinct attraction alongside the protected forest and plant areas.
Hiking Trails of Various Lengths
Several hiking trails offer different ways to explore the area on foot. The John Paul II Pilgrim Trail was established in 1991, is 22 kilometers long and leads to Kalwaria Pacławska. The red hiking trail starts in Przemyśl, runs over the hills of the Pogórze Przemyskie and is 39 kilometers long within the landscape park.
The blue hiking trail is 74 kilometers long in total, runs mostly through forested areas and follows the San River for a short section. The right-bank Fortress Trail of the Przemyśl Fortress is 28 kilometers long and follows rural and forest paths to particularly interesting forts. The distances offer different route options: 22 kilometers for the Pilgrim Trail, 28 for the Fortress Trail and 74 for the blue trail. The stated length of 39 kilometers for the red hiking trail refers specifically to its section within the landscape park.
A trip to Prömsel brings together historic buildings, religious sites, forest landscapes and specific hiking routes. You can focus on individual monuments, the botanical collections in Bolestraszyce or the various protected areas. The hiking trails add the option of exploring on foot, while their different lengths make it easier to choose a route.
