Styków: Location and Local History

Styków is located about three kilometres from the centre of Głogów Małopolski, among remnants of the Sandomierz Forest. This gives the village a connection to the town centre as well as a natural setting. Its chapels and church reflect an architectural history that stretches from the 19th century to more recent times.

Matki Boskiej Różańcowej Chapel

The Matki Boskiej Różańcowej Chapel in Styków was built in 1880. It is constructed of brick and plastered. Pilasters divide its walls. These flat, column-like projections extend only slightly from the façade and give the wall a vertical structure. A broad cornice marks the upper edge at the roof. A square bell tower sits on the roof, and a rectangular portal is located at the entrance. The cornice creates a horizontal line, while the bell tower adds a tower-like accent. This makes it possible to distinguish the wall articulation, roof structure and portal as separate design elements.

Until 1990, the chapel served as a Mass chapel. May devotions and October devotions have also been held there since its foundation. This religious use adds to the building’s architectural significance, reflecting its history as a place for Mass and devotional services.

Old Chapel Opposite the Church

An old chapel stands opposite the church in Styków and dates from the mid-19th century. It is rectangular, built of brick and plastered. Two semicircular windows are set into the side walls. The tall, board-clad roof is topped by a bell tower with an iron cross. The rectangular ground plan contrasts with the semicircular window openings, while the tall roof adds another feature with its board cladding. The building, windows and roof all shape its architectural character.

Compared with the Matki Boskiej Różańcowej Chapel, the architectural accents differ: there, pilasters and a cornice divide the plastered wall; on the old chapel, the semicircular windows and tall boarded roof stand out. The bell towers also provide different accents: the Matki Boskiej Różańcowej Chapel has a square one, while the old chapel’s has an iron cross. If you are interested in sacred architecture, this comparison helps you pay attention to façade and roof forms as well as the buildings’ dates.

The Modern Church

The modern church stands on level ground. Construction began in 1985 and was completed in 1988. Bishop Ignacy Tokarczuk also blessed it in 1988; it was consecrated in 2013. The construction, completion and blessing therefore took place between 1985 and 1988, while the consecration came later. The chronology distinguishes the construction phase from the consecration: after completion and blessing in 1988, the church was consecrated in 2013. Styków’s building history thus spans the 19th-century chapels and the modern church.
