Baranów Sandomierski: Castle and Routes
Accommodation in Baranów Sandomierski
Baranów Sandomierski, with its Renaissance castle, offers a clear focus for planning a trip. The castle is commonly known as “Mały Wawel” (“Little Wawel”). There is also a hiking trail that passes historical buildings and complexes in the town, and a water route through several places along the Vistula. When choosing your hotel, first consider whether you want to focus your stay primarily on the castle and its exhibitions, or on the routes and their connections with the landscape.
Castle Museum and Historical Exhibitions
The castle houses a museum featuring 16th- and 17th-century interiors. It presents the history of the castle and its owners. The exhibition “Historia ludzi i miejsc zapisana w obrazach” offers another glimpse into the past: its exhibition hall displays a tabletop model of an achromatic stereoscope made by Smith, Beck & Beck in the mid-19th century. The castle thus highlights both the history of the building and individual historical objects.
The Archaeological Hall displays a boat that is among the longest of its kind in Poland and Europe. It probably dates from the Middle Ages, lay for centuries on the bed of the Vistula, and came to the castle under unusual circumstances. The account of this exhibit gives equal weight to its cautious dating and its long history on the riverbed: its medieval origins are probable, not stated as certain.
The castle visit also includes other ways of presenting history. Visitors can see an armory of knightly armor and a torture chamber; the visitor offer also includes historical scenes and a historical costume chamber. If you plan to visit several parts of the castle, check the current visiting hours in advance.
Castle Grounds and Landscape
The castle is surrounded by a 14-hectare park with a golf course. In the wider area around Baranów Sandomierski, Lake Tarnobrzeg was created on the site of the former mine of the Tarnobrzeg Sulfur Processing Plant “Siarkopol.” It covers almost 500 hectares. The castle park and the lake therefore offer two distinct landscape settings for planning a trip: the park at the castle complex and the lake in the wider area.
Another landscape setting lies in the southern part of the Baranów Sandomierski municipality: a forest area and the “Stawy Krasiczyńskie” pond complex are located there. The ponds are a fish-farming complex. They add a distinctive point of interest to the picture of the municipality, different from the castle and the lake.
Hiking Trail and Water Route
Green-marked hiking trail No. 7 runs via Majdan Królewski, Huta Komorowska, Poręby Dębskie, Nowa Dęba, Rozalin, Ślęzaki, Dąbrowica and Skopanie to Baranów Sandomierski. Historical buildings and complexes in the town lie along the route. Before setting out, check whether the green trail marking is current.
The “Szlak Wisły” water route starts either on the Wisłoka near Wola Zdakowska or on the Czarna near Połaniec. From there, it runs via Baranów Sandomierski, Tarnobrzeg and Sandomierz to Zawichost and Annopol. The routes differ in character: No. 7 is a hiking trail that passes historical buildings and complexes in the town; “Szlak Wisły” is a water route with two possible starting points and further named places along its course. This lets you treat the castle, hiking route and water route as distinct themes for your stay.
