Nowy Staw combines natural features with traces of history. The village is home to a rising spring in fractured, karstified rock; there was a blast furnace here in the 18th century. Nearby are Zamczysko and sections of the yellow Łagów–Ujazd hiking trail. For orientation, it is helpful to distinguish their locations: the spring and blast furnace are in Nowy Staw, while the hillfort and trail features are in the surrounding area.

A spring with visible sand bubbling

The spring has a discharge of 8 l/s and forms a pool about 7 m in diameter. The sand covering the pool bed can be seen bubbling. “Rising” describes the movement of water toward the surface; “fractured” and “karstified” refer to geological features of the subsurface. The measurements describe different aspects: 8 l/s is the discharge, while about 7 m is the diameter of the pool. The bubbling sand adds a visible phenomenon to these measurements. If you are interested in natural and aquatic landscapes, the spring offers a distinctive point of interest right in Nowy Staw.

Traces of the blast furnace

There was a blast furnace in Nowy Staw in the 18th century. Numerous slag fragments can still be found near the former furnace. A blast furnace is used in metalworking; slag is a residue produced during metallurgical processes. A historically significant site and a material detail that can still be found today are thus located in the same area. For a stay with an interest in local history, this offers a different perspective from the spring: the history of metalworking and its place in Nowy Staw.

Zamczysko and earlier settlement

Near Nowy Staw lies Zamczysko, with the substantial ramparts of a former hillfort. The site was probably the seat of the Łagów castellany. A castellany was a historical administrative district; its probable role as a seat also places Zamczysko within the administrative history of Łagów. A settlement beside Zamczysko is identified as the former Łagów and predates the town’s founding. Taken together, the hillfort, its possible administrative role and the interpretation of the settlement offer an archaeological and settlement-history perspective on the surrounding area.

Hiking trail through the surrounding area

The yellow Łagów–Ujazd hiking trail was marked in 2025. Before Nowy Staw, it crosses the Łagowica at a ford; after the village, it crosses the Wszachówka floodplain on a bridge. The two water crossings differ both in form and location: the ford is before Nowy Staw, the bridge after the village. The trail then climbs to a relatively flat ridge of the Pasmo Iwaniskie range. It offers fine views of the Pasmo Jeleniowskie range and the eastern edge of the Pasmo Orłowińskie range. Thus, near the destination, varied landscapes and views complement the historical interest of Zamczysko.
