Polichno offers two concrete themes to help you plan your trip: a marked cycling route through the town and the history of gliding in the region. The route provides a tangible estimate of distance and time; the historical connections lead to the primary school in Polichno and the aviators’ monument in nearby Gościniec. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, deciding whether cycling or aviation history matters more to you can be a starting point for your planning.

Cycling the “Skały i jaskinie” route

The black “Skały i jaskinie” cycling route passes through Polichno. It is about 26 kilometres long and takes approximately three hours by bicycle. These approximate figures provide a concrete guide to how much time the tour takes. If you choose the cycling route as your main activity, you can factor this estimate into your stay and set aside time for the ride as a longer activity. Check current route conditions locally before setting out.

Gliding history in Polichno

The LOPP Polichno–Pińczów Gliding School is named after General Leon Barbecki. It was established by merging the gliding clubs of Pińczów and Polichno. Its origins therefore connect two named places and the local gliding tradition. Polichno’s history also includes displays at the primary school about General Stanisław Skalski, one of the best-known pilots of the Second World War. The school also houses numerous exhibits about the gliding school, as well as an exhibition on the region’s aviation history. The aviation exhibition thus goes beyond the story of a single school or person and takes in the region as a whole.

Remembrance in nearby Gościniec

The aviators’ monument in nearby Gościniec was erected in 1992. It commemorates the heyday of the gliding school, its instructors and students, as well as Polish pilots who fought for the country’s independence during the Second World War. Commemorative ceremonies are held there every September, organised by the Municipality and Town of Chęciny. They honour aviators, instructors and graduates of the school who fought and fell in the Second World War. If attending the ceremony is important to your trip, check the specific date in advance.

Two different route lengths

Another route option is the first, just under 1.6-kilometre section of the walking and cycling path. It opened in 2022 and connects Gościniec with Polichno in the area of the school. This section is markedly shorter than the roughly 26-kilometre cycling tour, which takes approximately three hours. For planning purposes, the information answers two different questions: the cycling route gives an approximate timeframe, while the walking and cycling path, with its stated endpoints, provides orientation between Gościniec and Polichno in the area of the school.
