Braniewo can be explored from two specific perspectives: its place on the eastern Green Velo cycling route and the city’s historical themes. Geographically, Braniewo lies on the northwestern edge of the Równina Warmińska and Wybrzeże Staropruskie, right at the mouth of the Pasłęka in the eastern part of the Zalew Wiślany.

Braniewo on the Green Velo cycling route

In Warmia-Masuria, the eastern Green Velo cycling route connects, among other places, Elbląg, Braniewo, Pieniężno, Górowo Iławeckie, Lidzbark Warmiński, Bartoszyce, Węgorzewo and Gołdap. Braniewo is therefore one of the places included in this regional route. If you include Green Velo in your travel plans, you can use the town as a reference point along the route. Check current route conditions before setting out so that your plans match the latest route information. The cycling route offers a different travel focus from the city’s sights: here, the emphasis is on the connections between several places.

Hanseatic history and the Jesuits

From the 14th century onward, Braniewo was the only town in Warmia to belong to the Hanseatic League—a distinctive feature of the region’s urban history. The Jesuits began their work in Braniewo in the 16th century; Cardinal Stanisław Hozjusz brought them to Braniewo in 1565, the first time they had come to Poland. The town’s occasional nickname, “Athens of the North,” refers to the history of Collegium Hosianum and the later diocesan and papal seminaries. Membership in the Hanseatic League and the history of the college and seminaries point to different chapters in Braniewo’s past.

Sights and viewpoint

Braniewo’s sights include the Church of the Holy Trinity and the Gate Tower of the Bishops’ Castle. The Gate Tower is a fragment of the former castle of the Bishops of Warmia, which no longer survives. It serves as a tourist viewpoint; a metal spiral staircase at its northwestern corner leads to a viewing terrace. The tower is therefore a surviving fragment, not the castle as a whole. If you are planning to visit the tower, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

The former Jesuit college

The former Jesuit college also connects history with a specific place. Today, the building houses the Zespół Szkół Zawodowych im. Jana Liszewskiego w Braniewie and the Muzeum Ziemi Braniewskiej. The word “former” refers to the building’s past function; the two named institutions are part of its current use. If you would like to include the museum in your travel plans, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

When choosing a hotel in Braniewo, you can first decide on the purpose of your trip: a trip related to Green Velo has a different focus from a stay primarily shaped by Braniewo’s Hanseatic and Jesuit history.
