Pieniężno brings together the landscape along the Wałsza, cultural collections and historic buildings. These three perspectives can help you choose what to focus on when planning your trip. If you are looking for a hotel, first decide whether nature and geomorphology, exhibitions or the town’s history should be the main focus of your stay.

Nature along the Wałsza

Pieniężno lies on the middle course of the Wałsza. The river has the character of a mountain river; the “Dolina Rzeki Wałszy” nature reserve runs along its banks. The river and the reserve are therefore among the area’s distinctive landscape features.

A seven-kilometre nature trail was created because of the area’s distinctive natural features and geomorphology. Six stops focus on characteristic natural features of the reserve. The trail’s length gives you a guide for planning your walk, while the stops draw your attention to different features of the area. Check local trail conditions before your visit.

Museum and exhibitions

The Missionary and Ethnographic Museum is located in Pieniężno, in the building of the monastery and missionary seminary of the Society of the Divine Word. It displays ethnographic and natural history exhibits, grouped by theme, from China, Japan, New Guinea, Africa, Indonesia, India and South America. The thematic arrangement and the origins of the objects offer different ways to explore the collection.

The exhibition “Być misjonarzem” (“Being a Missionary”) covers the history and guiding principles of the Society of the Divine Word. “Tacy sami w świecie różnorodności kulturowej” (“The Same in a World of Cultural Diversity”) displays objects from different continents and cultures. The exhibitions therefore have different emphases: one focuses on a missionary society, while the other explores cultural diversity.

Buildings and town history

The present-day Neo-Gothic Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Pieniężno was consecrated by Bishop Andrzej Thiel in 1897. The town hall in the old town of Mehlsack/Pieniężno dates from the second half of the 14th century. Reconstruction of the old town and town hall began in the 1980s. These dates distinguish the medieval construction, the church’s consecration and the later start of reconstruction as separate historical reference points.

The ruins of the former Protestant church have been developed as an open-air place of remembrance and historical education; the outline of the foundations has been made visible. The focus is therefore not a complete church building, but its recognizable ground plan. A former hospital church in the centre of Pieniężno is currently used by a Greek Catholic congregation. If you plan to include this site in your itinerary, check in advance whether a visit is possible.

The two religious sites have different emphases: the former hospital church is notable for its current use by a congregation, while the ruins of the former Protestant church have been developed as a place of remembrance and historical education.
