Sałkowice is located in the Gmina Pasłęk in Elbląg County, in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship of Poland. The village lies on the Elbląg Upland. Its history goes back further than the written records suggest, and is reflected in several historic building and usage phases. The history of a former prayer house, which served various purposes over the years, is particularly illustrative.

A Village with a Long History

Sałkowice existed before the time of the Teutonic Order. The first written mention of the village dates from the 15th century. These two facts point to different periods: the settlement already existed earlier, but it is documented in writing from the century mentioned. In the late 16th century, Sałkowice was incorporated into Grądówko, which belonged to Achatius von Borck. During the Napoleonic Wars, a French military detachment was also stationed in Sałkowice. These events connect the village’s early settlement history with later political and military ties.

The Prayer House and Its Building Phases

A prayer house was built in Sałkowice in 1854. It also served as a chapel, school, and teacher’s residence. Its multiple uses make the building an illuminating part of the village’s history: a sacred space, educational facilities, and the teacher’s home were all housed in one building.

In 1857, the chapel received a pulpit, an organ, a baptismal font, and a wooden bell tower. These furnishings point to the building’s different functions: the pulpit and baptismal font were used for preaching and baptism, while the organ and bell tower complemented its religious use. The prayer house was rebuilt in 1925. The three dates distinguish the building’s construction, furnishing, and later reconstruction in chronological order.

Other Historic Remains

The former Evangelical chapel and school building has been preserved as a historic property. A former Evangelical cemetery also remains in Sałkowice. A former smithy is now a private residence. The building’s current private use is part of the context for understanding its history.

Later conversions are also part of the village’s history: after a change of ownership in 2000, a former school building was converted into a guesthouse. Sałkowice is thus home to different building histories, from the former multipurpose use of a prayer house to the later conversion of a school building into a guesthouse.

Geographic Orientation and Directions

Sałkowice lies on the Elbląg Upland and is administratively part of the Gmina Pasłęk, Elbląg County, and the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. The Elbląg Canal is another regional point of reference: this navigable waterway runs through the Vistula Fens and the Iława Lake District. The local history of Sałkowice and a waterway therefore represent different geographic scales within the wider landscape.

Voivodeship Road 1173N is also relevant when planning your route. The regional regulation of December 30, 2025, lists its route from Voivodeship Road 513 via Cieszyniec and Sałkowice to Surowe. Since road designations can change, it is advisable to check the current route information before setting out.

If you are looking for a hotel, you can think of Sałkowice as a destination with a clear historical focus. The village’s buildings and history offer specific points of interest, while the Elbląg Canal adds a broader regional perspective.
