Reszel offers several points of interest for a stay focused on architecture and local history: the bishop’s castle, churches, sections of the city walls, and historic granaries. The city park and an annual performance organized by the Municipal Cultural Centre provide further highlights. If you’re looking for a hotel in Reszel, these themes can help you plan your trip around your interests.

The castle and two viewpoints

Reszel’s bishop’s castle was built between 1350 and 1401. From the castle tower, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Old Town. The tower of the parish church of St Peter and Paul, which stands over 50 metres tall, offers another view over Reszel. You can climb it; on the way, you can see the clock mechanism and the bells hanging 32 metres above the ground. From the top, the panorama takes in the town and its surroundings. The two viewpoints offer different perspectives: the castle tower looks out over the Old Town, while the church tower’s panorama also extends to the surrounding area. If you plan to climb the church tower, check the latest access information before your visit.

Churches and architectural history

The parish church of St Peter and Paul has a three-aisled interior and furnishings dating from the mid-19th century. Its organ was built earlier, in 1829, by Jan Roth of Orneta. Two different periods thus come together in the same church: the early-19th-century organ and the later furnishings.

The late Baroque church of St John the Baptist has a different history. It was built in 1799–1800 to replace a Gothic church and is now a Greek Catholic church dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Lord. It is part of the former Jesuit college complex, which adjoins the north side of the castle.

Reszel’s historic granaries also offer insight into local building methods. They were built around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, combining half-timbered construction with plastered brick infill. The Old Presbytery, the residence of the Warmian prebendaries, was probably built in 1444 and is considered the oldest residential building in the town. Its date of construction is uncertain; its age makes it another point of interest in the history of housing in Reszel.

City walls, the Sajna, and the city park

The city walls were built between 1360 and 1370. Sections survive in the east and north of the town. One of Reszel’s two Gothic bridges crosses the Sajna and lies in the northeastern part of town. The remains of the walls and the bridge complement the churches and castle with further structures that tell the story of the town.

If you’d like to spend some time outdoors as well as visiting historic buildings, the city park has walking paths, a pond, and an amphitheatre. There is also a playground and an outdoor fitness area at the park exit onto Ulica Podmiejska. These park facilities offer a different focus from the historic walking tour: they provide a separate reason to spend time in the park.

Cultural event and choosing a hotel

The Municipal Cultural Centre stages an annual performance about the trial and execution of a woman. If this event is important to your trip, check the specific dates in advance. That way, you can include a possible visit in your plans without assuming it will take place on any given travel date.

When looking for a hotel in Reszel, you could start by considering what you want your stay to focus on: the bishop’s castle and its views, the churches and their architectural history, the surviving sections of the city walls, or time in the park. The annual performance may also factor into your travel dates. Before your trip, check both the latest access information for the church tower and the event dates.
