For a stay in Gmina Gietrzwałd, two distinct interests stand out: the cultural history of the village of Gietrzwałd and the cycling routes in the municipality. Marian history, regional art and the green promenade are among the village’s attractions; three official, signposted cycling routes are designated within the municipality. When planning your trip, you can consider cultural attractions and route choices separately.

Marian history and riverside paths

According to the local account, the Marian apparitions in Gietrzwałd are the only ones in Poland to have been officially confirmed by the Vatican. On 16 September 1877, during the apparitions, a chapel with a statue of the Virgin Mary was erected at the apparition site. A wooden chapel was also built on a hill that slopes gently down towards the river; it was later destroyed.

Aleja Różańcowa, which leads to the spring in Gietrzwałd, is planted with hornbeams and lined with 15 Rosary chapels. The sequence of the avenue and chapels gives this stretch a pronounced religious character. The investment in the gardens in Gietrzwałd, completed in 2014, included, among other things, an amphitheatre. By the river, the garden forms a green promenade along the Gietrzwałd circular walk, a walking route designated as part of the project.

Regional history and art

The Izba Muzealna is housed in a building above the Giłwa River, which the residents of Gietrzwałd call “kuźnia.” The exhibition includes items collected by students from a secondary school for a regional exhibition. The Izba Muzealna also displays old household objects with descriptions in the Warmian dialect and in Polish. The variety of objects and languages offers a tangible, everyday perspective on regional history.

The Deskale also depict individual stories from the area. They were created by Arkadiusz Andrejkow, an artist from Sanok. One Deskale depicts Klaus Jach, based on a photograph taken in 1948. Jach is shown with a bicycle that, according to the local account, was the first bicycle in Gietrzwałd. This image brings together a particular person, a historical photograph and a local story about the beginnings of cycling in the village.

For years, the Galeria Pełna Cudów at the Centrum Kulturalno-Bibliotecznym has promoted regional and folk art by amateur and professional artists. If you plan a visit, check in advance which exhibitions are currently on display. This lets you include the gallery in your travel plans without assuming a particular exhibition programme.

Cycling routes and itineraries

There are three official, signposted cycling routes in Gmina Gietrzwałd. The blue cycling route is 19.6 kilometres long, starts and ends in Gietrzwałd, and passes through Woryty, Nowy Młyn, Stękiny, Porbady and Wrzesina. The yellow cycling route also starts in Gietrzwałd, passes through Rentyny and ends back in the village. Both descriptions therefore name Gietrzwałd as the start and end point; the blue route also has a specific distance and several named villages.

Another named route is the Warmińska Droga Krajobrazowa, which runs from Gietrzwałd to Woryty. It is distinct from the colour-coded cycling routes, whose itineraries are described here by the villages they pass through. Please check current route conditions before setting out on a cycling trip. This way, you can weigh up the local history, art and different routes as separate options for your stay.
