Olsztynek offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: the remains of the Tannenberg Memorial, museums exploring the town’s history and wartime history, and trails that pass through or begin in the town. A local specialty adds another dimension. Depending on whether your main interest is history, a named route, or local specialties, you can plan your stay around that focus.

The Tannenberg Memorial and its era

The remains of the Tannenberg Memorial are within the town limits of Olsztynek. The mausoleum was built between 1925 and 1927 and dedicated to the Battle of Tannenberg, fought in August 1914. The two dates refer to different parts of the history: 1914 marks the battle, while the construction years refer to the later memorial. This distinction places the memorial in its historical context without conflating the building with the event.

If you are interested in the town’s history, the memorial offers a specific historical point of reference. Its dedication refers to an event from the First World War; the museums in Olsztynek broaden the perspective to include other historical subjects and the history of the town.

Museums: the town’s history and Stalag I B

The Muzeum Budownictwa Ludowego – Park Etnograficzny in Olsztynek museum complex includes Dom Mrongowiusza and the exhibition hall in the former Protestant church, which was rebuilt for museum purposes. Dom Mrongowiusza houses two permanent exhibitions dedicated to K. C. Mrongowiusz and the prisoners of war at Stalag I B Hohenstein. The exhibitions therefore focus on different subjects: one is dedicated to Mrongowiusz, the other to the prisoners of war.

Another museum is located in the attic of the town hall: the Multimedia Museum of the Stalag IB Prisoner-of-War Camp and the History of Olsztynek. It covers the history of the more than 655-year-old town, as well as the First and Second World Wars; Stalag IB Hohenstein is a particular focus. The subject is therefore covered both at Dom Mrongowiusza and in the town hall museum. There, it is presented in the context of the town’s history and the two world wars.

If you are planning a museum visit, it is worth checking current visiting hours in advance.
