Dorotowo: Memorial Sites, Natural Monuments and Cycling Route

When planning a stay in Dorotowo, there are several specific themes to explore: memorial sites, natural monuments, cycling and local history. Their historical contexts differ considerably. The cross, memorial stone and church tower are enduring features; the Christmas Eve custom belongs to the past, and the photo walk took place in 2026 as a one-off event.

Memorial Sites and Village History

A large cross and a memorial stone were erected on a hill in Dorotowo in memory of the battles. A military cemetery was established in Dorotowo on the shore of Lake Wulpińskie. The village landscape thus features two different forms of remembrance: a memorial on the hill and a cemetery on the lakeshore.

The tower of the Church of Blessed Dorota of Mątów rises above the buildings of Dorotowo. It was built with donations from current and former parish residents. The tower thus combines a prominent feature rising above the village buildings with a contribution from the parish. In the past, on Christmas Eve, farmhands would appear in Dorotowo with a Warmian szemel, accompanied by a musician. This custom adds a bygone village-life tradition to the buildings and memorials.

Two Lime Trees as Natural Monuments

The natural monuments along the road beyond Lake Kepijko include a three-trunk lime tree and a two-trunk lime tree. The three-trunk tree has listed trunk circumferences of 212 cm, 210 cm and 290 cm; the two-trunk tree measures 212 cm and 190 cm. The number of trunks and circumference measurements provide a concrete comparison between the two trees. For the three-trunk lime, the measurements of 210 and 212 cm differ by only 2 cm; the two measurements for the two-trunk tree differ by 22 cm. The third circumference measurement for the three-trunk lime, 290 cm, is considerably greater than the two similar measurements. The comparison thus shows not only the number of trunks but also how the circumferences vary.

Cycling Route and Other Activities

An 11 km cycling route runs from Dorotowo through Majdy and Kręsk to Stawiguda. If you plan to ride this route, check the current route conditions before setting out; they may change. A municipal project also envisaged connecting the pedestrian and cycle path with the existing cycling route along ul. Wulpińska in Tomaszkowo, as well as with Dorotowo and Majdy.

During a photo walk in 2026, the group met at the beach and then walked through the village. Participants looked for characteristic, “postcard-worthy” views of Dorotowo. This particular outing connected the meeting point at the beach with scenes in the village.
