Niedźwiedzie is located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in Szczytno County and the municipality of Szczytno. In terms of landscape, the village lies in the Masurian Lakeland, on the border between the Mrągowo Lakeland and the Masurian Plain. This places it within a larger lake district while also pinpointing its location between two named natural regions.

Founding and Early Settlement History

Niedźwiedzie was founded around 1800 as a settlement of the “szkatułowa” type on newly cleared land in the Chocholskie Forests. Its founding links the beginning of settlement to the clearing of forest land. In 1819, 19 residents received emphyteutic leases covering 19 łans. The figure 19 refers both to the number of residents and to the extent of the land allocated. Together, the founding around 1800 and the land grants mark two stages in the village’s early history: the establishment of the settlement and a later arrangement of emphyteutic leases.

Cycling Route and Nature

The Rowerem po Kolei cycling route runs for 42 kilometers from Szczytno to Biskupiec. It is rated easy, marked in blue, and follows a former railway embankment with a bituminous cycle path. A side route leads to the Kulka Nature Reserve and around Lake Łęsk. The 42-kilometer route between Szczytno and Biskupiec is therefore distinct from the described loop around the lake. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Another nature attraction is the Zabrodzie Nature Reserve. Stands of dwarf birch and bog vegetation are protected there. These features—a specifically identified protected plant community and a cycling route with a set course—appeal to different interests: one focuses on vegetation, the other on a route between two places and its side trail.

Szczytno: Culture, Waterfront and Water

Szczytno has renovated ruins of a Teutonic castle. The castle is associated with Henryk Sienkiewicz’s novel “Krzyżacy”: Jurand of Spychowo was imprisoned and tortured there. The 46-meter-high town hall tower offers a viewpoint over the town and the lake. Szczytno’s oldest church is the Evangelical church on Warszawska Street. It was built between 1717 and 1719, and original Baroque elements have been preserved at the altar and pulpit.
