Discover Spychowo: Krutynia, nature trail and history
Accommodation in Spychowo
Spychowo lies on the eastern edge of the Puszcza Piska and on Jezioro Spychowskie. The Krutynia, routes along the water, and cycling and hiking destinations are among the main features shaping your stay and helping you plan your trip. You can choose from a kayaking section, an accessible nature trail, a cycling route and historic sites.
Water routes on the Krutynia
The section of the Krutynia kayaking route in the Masurian Landscape Park begins in Spychowo. Just beyond the DK59 bridge, you can launch a kayak from the left bank of the river. From Spychowo, the Krutynia section follows the Spychowska Struga and passes under two wooden bridges for pedestrians and cyclists on its way towards Jezioro Zdrużno. There is also a canoeing section on the Krutynia from Spychowo to Krutyń. For orientation, these are distinct points on the water: the launch point on the bank, the route along the Struga and under the bridges towards the lake, and the section between the two named places. When choosing, you can distinguish these different options on the water by their starting points and routes.
Nature trail and facilities by the water
The “Jezioro Ciche” nature trail is accessible to everyone and follows comfortable paths and trails. It starts at the Spychowo Forest District Office on Jezioro Spychowskie. Facilities include benches, waste bins and the “Eko-Oczko” hut on Jezioro Ciche, with a fire pit. There is also a pier, an observation platform and a boardwalk across a bog. For orientation, it is useful to keep the lake names distinct: the nature trail starts on Jezioro Spychowskie, while the Eko-Oczko hut is on Jezioro Ciche. This makes it easy to identify the starting point and one of the named facilities.
Cycling and hiking routes
The green Szlak Ostatniego Niedźwiedzia cycling route starts at the cemetery in Spychowo, passes through Spychowo and Niedźwiedzi Kąt, through the “Pupy” nature reserve and by the “Jezioro Ciche” nature trail, then returns to the cemetery in Spychowo. Having the same start and end point makes it easy to understand the route as a loop; the named stops along the way provide additional orientation. Nearby, the 4.8-kilometre Szlak Fortyfikacji Szczycieńskiej Pozycji Leśnej hiking trail starts at the beach in Połom near Spychowo. It leads to historic fortifications dating from 1901 to 1944. When comparing these options, different features stand out: the cycling route passes through several named stops before returning to its starting point, while the length and destination of the fortifications are specified for the hiking trail. The “im. Melchiora Wańkowicza” route also passes through Spychowo.
Culture and history
Spychowo is home to a Neo-Gothic church dating from 1903. Nearby, the Szlak Fortyfikacji Szczycieńskiej Pozycji Leśnej hiking trail leads to fortifications dating from 1901 to 1944. These represent two distinct historical themes: the church in the village and the fortifications along the hiking trail. If you are interested in architectural history or historic fortifications, you can include these separate points of interest in your travel plans.
The Forest Museum in Spychowo can be visited after contacting the Spychowo Forest District Office in advance, together with one of its staff members. If you would like to include a museum visit in your plans, remember to make contact in advance.
