You can get to know Szczytno from several perspectives during a stay: the Muzeum Mazurskie explores the history of the town and its surroundings, the castle ruins offer cultural points of interest, and the yellow-marked Mazursko–Kurpiowski hiking trail leads along a stretch between two lakes. There is also Domowe Małe near the town centre and the annual Festiwal Dni i Noce Szczytna. When planning your trip, you can decide whether culture, a hike or an event date should be the main focus of your visit.

Castle and Museum: Szczytno Through the Ages

Since 5 July 2019, the Muzeum Mazurskie in Szczytno has presented a permanent exhibition on the history of the town and its surroundings. Its time span ranges from prehistory to the present day. This means the focus is not only on Szczytno itself, but also on the surrounding region. If you are interested in the history of the area, this exhibition offers a connected overview of different periods.

The ruins of the Teutonic Order castle provide another point of interest. The modernised ruins were presented as a new tourist attraction in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. Visitor facilities include multimedia devices that visitors can operate themselves to access information tailored to their interests. Their use has also been adapted to the habits and perceptions of young people. Alongside the built surroundings, information that visitors can access themselves is therefore a key part of a visit to the castle.

The castle’s north wing has rooms on two levels for opening receptions and permanent or temporary exhibitions. Topics can range from history to contemporary local art. The exhibition spaces are designed for year-round operation. If you want to see a particular exhibition, it is worth checking the dates before your visit. The tourist information office is also located in the castle’s exhibition hall, which is intended to operate year-round.

A Trail Between the Lakes and the Historic Chata

The yellow-marked Mazursko–Kurpiowski hiking trail begins at the Muzeum Mazurskie, by the castle ruins. In Szczytno, the route crosses a bridge over the channel between Domowe Duże and Domowe Małe. It ends at the historic Chata Mazurska on Konopnicka Street. The route thus starts at the museum and castle and follows the bridge section to a historic house.

The Chata Mazurska dates from the mid-19th century. For a trip that combines culture and exercise, the route offers several specific points of interest: the start at the museum by the castle ruins, the channel between the lakes and the historic building at the end. You can include the route in your stay based on its places and themes, without needing to give the same emphasis to every section.

Lake, Park and Annual Town Festival

Domowe Małe is close to the centre of Szczytno and covers an area of 11.4 hectares. The lake also features on the hiking trail, as part of the channel between Domowe Małe and Domowe Duże. The two lakes are therefore both a specific stop along the route and part of the landscape that may play a role in planning a stay in Szczytno.

The centre is also home to a park named after musician Krzysztof Klenczon. It features a monument to Klenczon and a fountain. The park adds its own cultural note to the town centre, complementing the historical themes of the castle and museum with a place of remembrance for a musician.

The Festiwal Dni i Noce Szczytna is an annual town festival. If the festival is the reason for your trip, include the dates of the edition you want to attend in your plans and check them before booking. For other stays, the permanent exhibition, castle and hiking trail can each provide a focus of their own. Which of these aspects of Szczytno matters to you can help determine your travel dates.
