Wicko Between the Lake and Parkland

Wicko is located on Lake Wicko Małe. When planning your trip, you can focus on two distinct themes: the landscape of Woliński National Park and the cultural history of the Stanowisko broni V3 exhibition in Zalesie-Wicko. The Wicko protected area covers 984 hectares and lies in the central part of the national park, on a varied, undulating ground moraine. Its changing terrain and location in the park give the natural landscape a distinctive character. At the same time, the exhibition offers a separate historical focus.

Compare the Hiking Trails

For hikers, the blue trail is a specific point of reference. It runs through the Wicko protected area, is 26 kilometres long, and leads from Międzyzdroje in the direction of Karnocice. The trail passes through picturesque countryside and beautiful woodland and is well marked. The blue “Nad Zalewem” trail starts at the Kredownia in Wicko. Its name, length, direction and starting point can help you consider this route as a distinct focus for your trip. The trail markers also help you find your way along the route.

A different route description applies to the Way of St James. Its route runs from Wolin via Płocin, Karnocice, Lubin, Wicko and Zalesie; the section in Międzyzdroje municipality is 24.5 kilometres long. By contrast, the 26 kilometres of the blue trail refer to its route through the Wicko protected area. The figures therefore describe different trails and geographical sections. On the Way of St James, the sequence of places listed helps you find your way; for the blue trail, the starting point at the Kredownia and the direction from Międzyzdroje to Karnocice are also specified. This distinction makes it easier to tell the two route descriptions apart when planning your trip.

Landscape and History

One distinct landscape feature is the Stara Kredownia near Wicko. It is a former open-pit quarry, now covered with heat-loving grassland. Its former use and present-day condition give the site two distinct time periods. This adds a specific landscape history to the varied, undulating ground moraine. If you are interested in nature beyond hiking routes, Stara Kredownia is a point of interest in its own right.

The Stanowisko broni V3 exhibition in Zalesie-Wicko is part of the area’s cultural history. It is Poland’s only exhibition of the German V3 secret weapon from the Second World War. It is housed in a bunker where V3 projectiles were stored. Nearby, concrete foundations remain as the remains of long-range gun emplacements. This historical focus therefore includes both the exhibition and bunker, as well as the structural remains of the gun emplacements. If history plays a part in choosing your destination, the V3 theme offers a clearly defined connection to the Second World War.
