Wolin: Archaeology and Urban History
Accommodation in Wolin
Wolin offers several historical highlights: a regional museum, early settlement history, archaeological sites, and buildings from different centuries. The Jarmark Wikinga also shapes the city’s image as an event venue. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether you would like to focus primarily on cultural history, architecture, or a festival.
Museum and Early Settlement History
The Muzeum Regionalne im. Andrzeja Kaubego was founded in 1966 and is one of Wolin’s oldest cultural institutions. Its permanent exhibitions cover archaeological topics from Wolin’s heyday in the 9th to 11th centuries, as well as the earliest settlement history of Wolin Island. A model shows the town at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. This shifts the focus from early settlement topics to a later view of the town’s layout.
Cemetery and Trading District
Wzgórze Wisielców is home to a cemetery that is among the oldest early medieval necropolises in West Pomerania. At the end of the 19th century, 93 burial mounds were counted there; 34 have survived. The historical count and the surviving remains provide two concrete points of reference for assessing the site’s significance.
Srebrne Wzgórze tells a different side of early history. A large industrial and trading district was established there in the 9th century, fortified by a defensive rampart and equipped with its own port. Horn and amber processing were particularly well developed. In contrast, Wzgórze Wisielców focuses on burial customs, while Srebrne Wzgórze was shaped by trade and processing.
Townscape and Historic Buildings
Wolin’s town hall was built in 1881 after the old town hall on the market square was demolished. The Neo-Gothic brick building has a tower notable for its coat of arms and clock face. The town walls date from the 14th and 15th centuries and survive only in fragments in the northeastern part of the town, near Dworku Wolińskim. The town hall and the remains of the walls thus represent different periods in the town’s history.
The Dutch-style windmill was built on the southwestern outskirts in the second half of the 19th century. It has three storeys and is 14 metres high. From the 1950s to the 1970s, it served as an industrial mill. Wolin’s historical heritage also includes the runestone commemorating the Danish king Harald Bluetooth. It recalls a ruler who is believed to have ruled over Wolin and founded the fortified camp of Jomsborg. A group of Vikings was stationed at this camp.
Orientation and Getting There
At the northeastern entrance to the town, the granary on the Dziwna River serves as a landmark and has long been one of Wolin’s main postcard motifs. The building is privately owned and not in operation. Its role as a prominent image distinguishes it from the historical topics covered in the museum’s permanent exhibitions.
The Wolin swing bridge over the Dziwna connects Wolin Island with the mainland and is one of five swing bridges in operation in Poland. When it is opened for shipping, road traffic is stopped. If your route depends on the bridge, check the latest opening information before setting off.
Jarmark Wikinga and Travel Planning
For three days, the Jarmark Wikinga fills Wolińskie Błonia in Wolin with stalls, tents, and a large stage. The programme includes demonstrations and concerts. Visitors can also sample medieval and contemporary baked goods at the Jarmark. The baked goods are part of the event programme and should not be viewed separately from the festival. If the Jarmark is a deciding factor in your trip, check the event dates before booking.
At the level of the Wolin municipality, its western part lies within Woliński National Park, which is located on Wolin Island. This regional context adds a distinct geographical perspective to the town’s history. If you are looking for hotels in Wolin, you can plan your trip around your interests: archaeological topics, buildings, or the days of the Jarmark Wikinga.
