Pyrzyce and the wider travel region

If Pyrzyce is your destination, nature and cultural attractions in the wider Pyrzycki County can also enrich your travel plans. The county area includes the surroundings of Lake Miedwie, the Płonia and Lake Płoń, as well as the Barlinek Lake District between Tetyń and Jesionowo. The following landscapes and cultural sites are in the wider travel region and are not all places within the city of Pyrzyce. If you are looking for a hotel in Pyrzyce, you can use these regional themes as inspiration for your own plans.

Lakes and landscapes in Pyrzycki County

At 36.8 km², Lake Miedwie is Poland’s fifth-largest lake. In places, its shores have shallow-water areas several dozen metres wide. Persistent winds create favourable conditions for windsurfing there. The lake’s size and open waters give it a different character from the lake complex near Lipiany, which consists of the ribbon lakes Chłop, Będzin and Wądół.

The shoreline of the Lipiany lakes is highly indented, with numerous peninsulas and islands. Narrow passages, shallow-water areas and shoals alternate with relatively great depths; anglers are drawn to the clear water. This gives travellers a choice of contrasting landscapes: broad expanses of water and windsurfing conditions at Lake Miedwie, or an intricate shoreline with several lakes and varied waterside areas near Lipiany.

Botanical Garden in Przelewice

Ogrody Przelewice covers more than 30 hectares and is home to a collection of distinctive trees and shrubs from different parts of the world. The garden includes a Japanese garden, a collection of rhododendrons and azaleas, the Valley of the Five Springs and the Rose Avenue. This variety brings different garden settings together in one place and offers a distinct focus alongside the lake landscapes of Pyrzycki County.

The Botanical Garden is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. from 1 April to 21 September, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from 22 September to 31 October, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from 1 November to 31 March. In winter, the garden is closed on Mondays. As opening hours vary by season, check the current schedule before travelling.

Churches and earlier history

The parish church in Brzesko is a Marian shrine and was built from granite blocks in the 13th century. Inside, the altar and pulpit date from the early 17th century. There is also a carved, polychrome-painted ceiling with pinecone-shaped corbels hanging down from the centre of the vault. The church’s history and furnishings can thus be seen in different parts of the building.

In Karsko, in the municipality of Przelewice, there is a megalithic tomb field with two similar Kujavian-type megalithic tombs. They are known as “Zelki” or “giant tombs” and were built during the later phases of the Neolithic, approximately between 3000 and 2200 BC. The tombs offer a much older historical perspective than the church buildings in Brzesko.

Lipiany also has a long history: a fortified Pomeranian settlement was established in the 9th century on a peninsula in Lake Wedyjskie, now called Wądół and Kościelne. It formed the southern outpost in the defence system of the Pyrzyczany tribe. A later suburb settlement gave rise to the subsequent town of Lipiany.
