Żukowo’s local history brings together several distinct periods, each connected to specific buildings and places of remembrance. The area also has a named natural monument and a cycling route that passes through the village. These themes can offer different focuses for planning your trip: church architecture, cemetery memorials, or cycling and the landscape.

History and the Parish Church

The Parish Church of the Transfiguration (Przemienienia Pańskiego) in Żukowo is Gothic. It was consecrated on 7 April 1946. Its furnishings include an altar, a pulpit and organs dating from around 1700. To understand the timeline, it is helpful to distinguish these details: the Gothic classification describes the church, the consecration took place on 7 April 1946, and the organs are dated to around 1700. The architecture, consecration and furnishings thus represent different aspects of the church’s history.

The village’s history reaches further back: Żukowo was established around the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, while its first recorded mention dates to 1363. Its establishment and its first recorded mention are two distinct points of reference. Another personal connection to Żukowo is Heinrich von Podewils. He was born here and served as finance minister at the courts of Frederick William I and Frederick the Great of Prussia. In addition to local and church history, his biography offers a perspective on a person who held this office at two Prussian courts.

Lapidarium and Cemetery Memorials

The lapidarium in Żukowo contains several tombstones of former residents. It also includes a memorial plaque attached to a granite boulder. The plaque commemorates the Polish and German deceased of the former German parish of Żukowo who found their final resting place in this cemetery. It bears the years 1945–1995. The tombstones and memorial plaque have different emphases: the stones relate to former residents, while the plaque explicitly names the deceased of the former parish.

Another cemetery landmark is the chapel in the new Protestant cemetery. It was built in the 1930s, about 50 metres west of the church. The chapel and memorial plaque are associated with different places: the chapel stands in the new Protestant cemetery, while the plaque belongs to the lapidarium. Visitors exploring Żukowo’s places of remembrance can therefore consider these two connections separately.

Linden Avenue and Cycling Route

The landscape also features a specific natural monument: Żukowo’s Linden Avenue is among the natural monuments in the “Jezioro Łętowskie oraz okolice Kępic” landscape protection area. This connects the village with a designated protected area. For travellers who want to explore nature as well as architectural and local history, the linden avenue offers a distinct focus.

The Sławieński Szlak Rowerowy also passes through Żukowo. The route runs from Pomiłowo via Gwiazdowo and Żukowo, then continues via Janiewice to Łętowo. In total, the route covers about 25 kilometres of roads, forest tracks, paths and routes suitable for cyclists. This distance refers to the entire route, while Żukowo is named as one of the places along it. The cycling route and the local cultural and memorial sites can therefore be considered as distinct themes when planning your trip.
