Neustettin between marshes, lakes and architectural history
Accommodation in Neustettin
On the southern shore of Lake Wierzchowo, southeast of Wierzchowo, lies the “Wielkie Błoto” nature and forest education trail. Five information boards, a wooden walkway across the marsh and an observation tower are features of the trail. Nature information, marshland and scenic views are all found side by side. Check the condition of the facilities locally before visiting.
Marshes, lakes and protected nature
Gmina Szczecinek lies in the Drawsko Lakeland. The “Jeziora Szczecineckie” protected landscape area is located within the gmina. Bagno Kusowo is also in the gmina: the raised bog covers about 300 ha and is considered one of Poland’s largest and best-preserved Baltic raised bogs. The “Jezioro Kiełpino” water and flora protection area covers 49.4 ha and protects relict aquatic plants. Lake Wielimie, in turn, has an area of 17.9 km² and lies partly within Gmina Szczecinek.
These nature destinations each have a different focus: Bagno Kusowo is centered on the raised bog, while Jezioro Kiełpino protects relict aquatic plants. For Lake Wielimie, its size is noteworthy, as is the fact that only part of the lake lies within the gmina. These differences help you see the landscape as more than a uniform backdrop and choose a destination based on the nature topic that interests you.
Walking and cycling routes
The red-marked “Szlak Wzniesień Moreny Czołowej” walking trail is 161 km long and passes through Gmina Szczecinek. For cycling, there is the also red-marked “Szczecineckie Jeziora” route, which is 65.1 km long. It passes through the villages of Spore, Stare Wierzchowo, Wierzchowo, Trzebiechowo, Kusowo and Dalęcino in Gmina Szczecinek. The stated lengths make the difference between the two routes clear: the walking route is longer, while the cycling route offers a different scale of journey. Before setting out, it is advisable to confirm the markings, route and conditions locally.
Churches, palace complex and mural
The buildings also provide a historical timeline for your trip. In Trzebiechowo, the palace complex includes buildings from the second half of the 19th century. There is also a church there dedicated to Our Lady of Częstochowa, dating from the third quarter of the 19th century. The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Wierzchowo dates back to the 18th century. In Spore, the Church of the Holy Family was built between 1859 and 1865; the All Saints’ Church in Wilcze Laski was built in 1894.
Another historical detail is the “Przewodzi Partia” mural in Wierzchowo. It was created in 1975 and is still visible. The historic churches and palace complex thus stand alongside a later work of visual art. If you plan to visit the mural specifically, check in advance whether it is still on display.
Events and fishing
The aviation picnic takes place every year during the summer holidays in Wilcze Laski. Specific dates vary; if you want to plan your trip around it, check the dates for your chosen year.
Recreational fishing on Lake Wierzchowo in Gmina Szczecinek has been subject to a new order by the head of the gmina since February 24, 2026. Fishing is permitted only from the shore. As the rules may change, check them again before a fishing trip.
Plan your stay
For a stay in Neustettin, you can first decide whether to focus on nature and trails, architectural history or an event date. This makes it easier to plan accommodation around the things you are especially interested in seeing locally.
