Estarreja can be explored through a range of themes: a walking trail in Salreu, a river park, museums and urban art, as well as festivals and gastronomic events each offer something different. You can choose which ones to make part of your stay based on your interests and the time you have available.

Nature trails and the AntuĂŁ River

The Salreu trail starts and ends at the BioRia Environmental Interpretation Centre. It is about 8 km long and takes approximately two and a half hours. The route is classified as easy because it has no changes in elevation. Its distance and duration give you a clear framework for planning a hike.

The Parque Municipal do AntuĂŁ offers a different perspective on the local natural environment. The park, which covers about 4.6 hectares, lies between the urban area of Estarreja and the AntuĂŁ riverbed. A wooden walkway runs along part of the riverbank. From it, you can observe local wildlife and plant life; information panels complement the walk. So, the designated trail in Salreu and the park with its riverside observation opportunities offer different ways to enjoy nature.

Museums and urban art

The Museu Fábrica da História – Arroz is housed in the restored building of the former Hidro-Eléctrica de Estarreja, a former rice mill. The site connects the museum’s present-day name with the building’s former use. The Casa-Museu Marieta Solheiro Madureira in Estarreja has a different starting point: a residence designed in the late 1940s was converted into a house museum. Together, the two sites show different paths from former buildings to museums.

Since September 2016, ESTAU has turned the streets of Estarreja into a museum of urban art. Guided tours of the ESTAU route take about 1 hour and 30 minutes. If you would like to include the tour in your plans, check in advance whether the guided option is available during your visit.

Events and local cuisine

The ObservaRia – Estarreja Birdwatching Fair offers an extensive programme focused on birdwatching, nature tourism, photography, science communication and environmental education, as well as raising awareness of environmental protection. The programme includes field trips. The lecture series is also part of the programme and is open to all citizens. The event thus combines nature observation with different forms of education and outreach.

The Carnaval de Estarreja has been celebrated since 1897. Every year, the children’s and adults’ parades attract tens of thousands of visitors, with more than 2,000 performers taking part. Visitor and participant numbers may vary. The traditional Festas de Santo António de Estarreja honour the municipality’s patron saint. During the Marchas Populares in honour of Santo António, hundreds of costumed performers parade through Estarreja with themes drawn from folk and traditional culture.

The Mercado Antigo depicts life in the late 19th century and the mid-1940s through historical re-enactments. The events described therefore differ considerably: from the carnival, with its children’s and adults’ parades, to cultural performances and depictions of bygone times. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular event, check the latest dates and programmes.

Every year, gastronomic festivals called “Tasquinhas de Gastronomia Regional” are held in all the municipalities of Estarreja district. Dishes on offer include Rojões, eel dishes, foods made with Broa and typical regional sweets. For a culinary-focused visit, consider travelling during one of these festivals.

For planning your time, you can compare two specific activities: the Salreu trail takes approximately two and a half hours, while a guided tour of the ESTAU route takes about an hour and a half. For the guided ESTAU option, check availability in advance.
