Barrinha de Esmoriz and birdlife

Barrinha de Esmoriz, also known as Lagoa de Paramos, is a rare medium-sized coastal lagoon between the municipalities of Espinho and Ovar. It is unique of its kind along Portugal’s northern coast. Both names refer to the same lagoon and help place this body of water in its regional context.

There are 129 bird species regularly found at the Barrinha; a further 33 species occur occasionally or rarely. The figures therefore distinguish regular occurrences from additional, less common ones. If you are interested in nature, this distinction gives a more specific picture of bird diversity than an undifferentiated species list.

The Barrinha boardwalk is about 6 km long. As another route option, the 10 km Ecopista do Atlântico runs along Estrada Florestal and connects the beaches of Esmoriz and Furadouro. The comparison shows two different scales: the boardwalk is the shorter route, while the Ecopista connects two named beaches. This helps you distinguish the route lengths and the respective spatial relationships when planning your excursions.

Forest trails and routes

Parque Ambiental do Buçaquinho opened on 25 April 2013 and covers 24 ha of protected woodland. The park has trails for walking and cycling, running over unpaved or wooden paths. These descriptions of the trail surfaces refer to two specific types of path and make the park a distinct nature and outdoor activity option among the interests available to visitors.

For planning purposes, the trails in the park and the two routes around the Barrinha and the beaches are not the same: Parque Ambiental do Buçaquinho focuses on paths for walking and cycling. The Passadiço and the Ecopista are defined by their lengths; the Ecopista also connects Esmoriz and Furadouro. This makes it possible to distinguish between exploring trails within a woodland area and taking a longer route between two beach locations.

Culture and water sports

Tanoaria Josafer is a living cooperage museum with more than 100 years of history. It adds a craft element to your travel plans, distinct from the landscape and trail options. The Palheiros group comprises eight palheiros built at Praia Velha in Esmoriz. Together, these places also draw attention to crafts and architectural features in the cultural landscape of Praia de Esmoriz.

In Esmoriz, Barrinha Surf School offers surf lessons, stand-up paddleboarding, bodyboarding and skimboarding. Alongside nature trails and the beach, these specifically named water sports provide a separate area of interest. The options range from surf lessons to other water sports, without requiring the same kind of excursion or activity.
