In São Vicente de Pereira Jusã, religious buildings, older houses and the history of a former hat factory are part of the local story. The historic centre of Pereira Jusã is now part of the town of São Vicente de Pereira Jusã. Its buildings date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. This gives the town a clear focus if you are interested in architecture and regional history during your trip.

Chapels and azulejo facades

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in the historic centre, was founded in 1763. Its facade is entirely covered in blue-and-white azulejos. Inside is a gilded altarpiece carved in polychrome. Two distinct decorative features come together in this building: the continuous tiled surface on the facade and the colourful, carved and gilded work of the altarpiece. These details offer a tangible way to appreciate the chapel’s architectural character.

The Igreja Matriz de São Vicente de Pereira also has an 18th-century facade entirely covered in azulejos. The Chapel of São Lourenço is also part of the built heritage of São Vicente de Pereira Jusã. Together with the buildings in the historic centre, these examples show how strongly religious architecture is part of the local heritage.

Houses and religious heritage

Older houses in São Vicente de Pereira Jusã were built from slate and saibro, with granite stonework. A different architectural period is represented by the manor houses built between the second half of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century. This is a significant group of houses, also known as “abrasileiradas”. The two periods offer distinct points of reference: older building materials on the one hand, and a later group of manor houses on the other.

Another element of the religious heritage is the Aron Hakodesh. In São Vicente Pereira, it is integrated into a traditional house near Largo da Capela de São Geraldo. In the context of family worship, it was used to store Torah scrolls and other liturgical objects. In 2021, the Aron Hakodesh was classified as a building of public interest. The connection between the house, its religious function and its classification gives this site a distinct place in the town’s architectural and cultural history.

Hat factory and agricultural tradition

The former Santos & Irmãos hat factory is part of the history of local industry. It enjoyed a good reputation across Europe for producing felt and wool hats and was one of the pioneers of Portugal’s hat industry. Emigrants from the “Torna-Viagem” group helped establish the factory. The town’s history therefore highlights both craft production and the contribution of returning emigrants.

Agriculture also shaped the past of São Vicente de Pereira Jusã. Its traditions included growing maize, grapevines, legumes and fruit. Historically, the town’s proximity to the Ria de Aveiro contributed to the fertility of the soil.

Former routes and choosing your destination

Five crosses, known in Portuguese as “cruzeiros”, mark former footpaths. These included routes used by pilgrims travelling to neighbouring places. This history of footpaths adds a perspective on movement between places to the architectural story.
