Montalvo: Stage Stop on the Ruta del Guadiana
Accommodation in Montalvo
The 11th stage of the Ruta del Guadiana follows a road route through Montalvo. It is described as consistently hilly, with constant ups and downs, and is unmarked.
When planning your stage, the route profile and waymarking are two different considerations. The constant ups and downs describe the character of the route; the lack of signs affects navigation. So check the route in advance and don’t rely on signposts alone to find your way. This lets you take both features into account when choosing your route, without assuming that the stage number means it is marked.
Culture and history in the wider travel area
The wider travel area also includes cultural and historical themes from Serpa and SĂŁo Domingos. In Serpa, the city walls encompass the Portas de Moura and the Portas de Beja. These two gates are the only ones of the five original city gates that have survived. The highest part of the hill corresponds to the original medieval town centre, with Moorish and Christian phases. The country estate of the Counts of Ficalho stands by the eastern city wall.
The two gates represent individual surviving parts of the city walls; the medieval town centre refers to the broader historical context at the highest part of the hill. Its Moorish and Christian phases place it within the layered history of Serpa.
The Museu do Relógio in Serpa offers a different perspective. Its collection includes more than 1,800 clocks dating from the 17th century to the present day. The museum is housed in ten rooms of a 16th-century convent and is considered unique of its kind on the Iberian Peninsula. Here, a collection spanning a broad period and a historic convent setting come together. The convent dates from the 16th century; the collection spans the 17th century to the present day. The museum building’s history therefore begins earlier than the period covered by the clocks in its collection.
In Serpa, Cante Alentejano is sung spontaneously every day in taverns or leisure clubs, often in a relaxed gathering after work. The Museu do Cante in Serpa opened in summer 2021. The tradition is therefore encountered both as spontaneous singing and as the subject of a dedicated museum.
In São Domingos, the former mining complex is a destination for industrial archaeology; it was once an important centre for extracting pyrite. This brings the former mining history of the wider travel area into focus alongside Serpa’s urban history. If you’re interested in regional cuisine, Queijo Serpa DOP is a specific example: in Serpa, it is one of the most highly regarded starters.
